       Avoid englisch.stackexchange.com
By: SHL Date: March 24, 2019, 5:08 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I visited that english.stackexchange.com site and I have to say
with their censorship they make italki look censorship free. If
you say anything they don`t think is even up to their standards,
you get banned (their alleged high quality standards).
Here`s an example of what got me suspended (until I write better
answers they tell me). Someone asked:
       What does this mean?
„I hope such readers will be persuaded that the profundity and
value of these ideas more than repay the intellectual struggle
       they require [...].“
All I said was the sentence really was essentially
unintelligible, at the worst, or far too esoteric at best, and
if it came out of a textbook somewhere, it was probably intended
for some PhD philosophy students someplace because no one else
would write, let alone speak this way (what in the world does
„repay intellectual struggles mean?“..okay, maybe I can imagine
some weird definition, but who talks or writes this way? And the
„profundity of the values of the ideas“? What is that?
Then some smark alleck Frenchman (I assume) come back and said,
„Please stop writing non-answers that make patently false claims
about how people use the English language. The sentence is
perfectly understandable and does not contain any words that an
average native English speaker should struggle with. It´s
neither technical nor philosophical; it just happens to make use
of non-colloquial vocabulary, which is often the mark of good
       writing.“
So, Jerry or Neal, next time you have a casual conversation with
your neighbor, just say you are „struggling to repay your
intellectual struggles“ because of the „profundity of the values
of your ideas“ and see the looks you get ???

I doubt anyone would write anything as kooky as that in German.

Let's take a second to analyze this. Shall we? SHL is kicked off
Italki, Quora, and English stack exchange. And there may be
others he hasn't told us about. I'm not a math professor but I
       can spot the common denominator.

       Guten tag, SHL
I'm a newcomer here. I'm an English learner. I often seek
some words on english stack exchange. If you say one should try
to avoid this site, may I know which site is more reliable?
I once searched for the difference between 'I teach
Mandarin at school' and 'I teach Mandarin in school' on the
various websites (including English stack exchange). There are
more than one explanations about it which still made me more
confused. Then, I asked it on ITalki.
Surprisingly, I got two different answers. English is
       complicated.

Jerry, you are too funny. We had a Judge in another County years
ago (like in the 90s) and he was kind of a nut. I appeared
before him on a few occasions and yes, he was strange. I even
tried a jury trial in front of him once and he must have been
having a good week, because he didn`t get on us too much. I`ll
never forget him telling me to raise my hand to leave the
courtroom for a restroom break, during a trial break, before
leaving his courtroom. I was like „what is this? This guy is
strange.“ Anyway, long story short, he got an admonishment for
misconduct by the Committee on Judicial Performance once, which
he ignored and it took them another 5 years to finally impeach
him for misconduct and get him off the bench (the DAs office
hated him. He said once in front of a jury trial to a young
Hispanic DA, that he`d do well to „loose the accent.“ Can you
imagine saying that? And then he did some other crazy thing,
like making the female DAs cry by putting them down—he`d say to
test how they would handle it). Once they got rid of old Bruce
(that was his first name), the old running joke in the lawyer
community was that someone had gotten ahold of his elementary
school transcripts and found his 5th grade teacher wrote,
„Doesn`t play well with other children.“ That always made me
laugh. After reading what you said, it all came back to me.
Maybe Steve just doesn`t play well with other children! LOL.
Actually, I have found some nice people on these other boards.
But there really are some mean-spirited people there too.

       Moin Terecia,
A nice hello back! Sorry I can`t really recommend any
alternative sites like italki or stack exchange off the top of
my head, but if you read englisch.stackexchange.com ´s
guidelines they are rather strict about some things. You know
they have a stack exchange for dozens of topics, for gamers, for
science people, just about everything. One of their rules on
their language sites is not to ask questions seeking
translations which can be found in online dictionaries, or
grammar sources. Not to ask for explanation of grammar rules
(again if these can be located on other sites) and if you
violate these rules someone will just vote to close the thread
and then no one can post (they have several somewhat odd rules
on voting. If someone gets so many flags on a questions then the
thread closes.) There are so many rules it`s unbelieveable. You
earn points for certain answers (that someone thinks are good)
and loose points for other answers. I recall I got flagged and
not allowed to post on some thread because I had lost too many
points for something. It is odd. You can try them again. It
might work out fine for you, so don`t let me discourage you.
I`ve seen some good posts and good answers. But, one of the
really strange things is if you ask 5 native speakers a question
about the language, you often get 5 different answers. That´s
not at all uncommon. So going from stackexchange to italki it
doesn`t surprise me to hear that.
All I can figure is stackexchange`s language sites are for
people who are not so much learning the language, but for those
who already know it, but just want clarification of some very
esoteric nuances of certain words or something. Their rules seem
to exclude every possible question about the language other than
that. But, then they turn around and say don`t ask for things
you can get from a thesaurus, like synonyms. So, it is rather
hard to know what they consider good questions.
One thing I have found disappointing about both stackexchange
and Quora (which is not of course a language board) is that they
can be a little hard to navigate through, and you have to notice
the date something was posted. They don`t purge old posts. Like
I`ve found some posts I thought looked really interesting and
then noticed them dated in 2012. Like 7 years old? Who`s paying
attention to something he or she wrote 7 years ago? That´s a
major criticism I have of those places. So many post are many
years old. Like people on Quora talking about Obama in 2014? Why
don`t they just clean up all the old posts?
This board may be small, but it´s the friendliest and most fun
out there. That´s what I have found. People are wonderful here.
And language question are all welcome. And you will get good
answers from people. The posts are new and interesting too.
I think of it like this. Imagine social media sites as being
like countries. We`re sort of like the Liechtenstein of social
media sites. Small, friendly, nice people. Nobody dislikes
Liechtenstein, right? Who would? I`m sure it`s a beautiful place
and the people are probably fantastic. Places like Quora and
stackexchange are so big, they are kind of like the USA, and
maybe have some good things to offer, but then you get all these
nasty people showing up there, like that nasty Frenchman I had
to deal with on stackexchange. (Unfortunately I didn`t have a
chance to write back to that chap and say a few things because
they closed the thread on me, right after he got the last word
       in.)
We`re all very glad you are here, Terecia. And ask any grammar
questions you like. We are all as qualified as those
stackexchange or italki people to answer.

Terecia, stackexchange is a pretty good site for learners (and
teachers!) of both English and German. In fact, it's the best
       site I've found so far.
