       What is art?
By: Allie Date: February 20, 2019, 5:17 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday the German creative director, fashion designer and
photographer Karl Lagerfeld, aged 85, passed away.
He had been in charge of the French maison Chanel for over 30
years, able to reinvent its staples year after year.
People all over the world mourn the loss of the fashion icon, as
his influence and artistry will be missed.
Some, on the other hand, are unaware of the fact or can’t
understand the commotion, after all “fashion is just clothes”
and don’t credit it with any artistic status.
This also happens with other crafts and even some renowned
artists are contested (take the recent internet campaign against
       Renoir, for example).
With this in mind, what do you consider art?
Literature, classical music and oil painting?
Graffiti? Tattoos, maybe? Fashion? Brazilian funk?

I saw some really unusual pieces of art during my travels. MONA
(Museum of Old and New Art) in Hobart, Tasmania displays some
       remarkably crazy things.
Here's one of them, Cloaca Professional, a digesting and pooping
machine. It does exactly what it says on the tin. Food is being
passed through the containers, until it finally turns into
excrement - at a precisely given time. I was told it would poo
at 2 pm and it did! The stench was almost unbearable, though.

Here's an interesting article about it that touches the topic of
       cooperation between humanities and science:

Is it art? Depends on what you see as art, which depends on what
you think the purpose of art is. But I think it's "healthy" to
display such things in art galleries. As long as you don't stand
       too close.

I just checked two words, art and artificial.
According to the Cambridge dictionary, art means
A2 level: the making of objects, images, music, etc. that are
       beautiful or that express feelings.
C1 level: a skill or special ability.
       How about 'artificial'?
B2 level: made by people, often as a copy of something natural.
C2 level: not sincere; not truly intended.
Things called contemporary art is required C level ability to
understand. No wonder I can't understand it.

       Nikola,
That article says that exhibit is the one most hated by visitors
but also that people spend the most time with.
I was thinking from the perspective of the caretakers of the
museum. Who would like maintaining that exhibit? if I were on
staff there, like a cleaning person, I am sure I would much
prefer the exhibits that simply needed to be dusted once in a
while. I would not want to be the one having to clean up the
       poo.

Chizuko and Erik, if you like Banksy I suggest a visit to the
separation wall that the Israelis constructed to wall off
Palestine and the Palestinians in their own land. Bethlehem
which is 6 km from Jerusalem is completely encircled by this
concrete monster. Banksy and other artists painted on it several
       murals.

       @Susan
They actually have one member of staff there all the time,
sitting in the stinky room and making sure no one touches
anything. They couldn't pay me enough money to do this kind of
job. It really makes your stomach heave after a while.

Anosmia (loss of the sense of smell) is probably a prerequisite,
       don't you think?
