The British-Irish Dialect Quiz
By: Coligno Date: February 19, 2019, 5:15 am

I know very few people here are from Britain or Ireland, a few
more have lived or are living there, but you might want to have
a go at this quiz just for fun anyway to see which part of the
archipelago speaks your kind of English.

I saw this on italki when Dan Smith posted it, it's really good.
Even though I wasn't born there, it located very accurately
where I used to live. It has worked for my English friends too,
not so much for their children who seem to have thrown it off
completely, getting areas they've never even been to :)

Hm, seems like the test is pretty accurate :)
"Definitely not from around here are you? Your answers were
closer to the average person outside of Ireland and Britain than
anywhere inside it".
What surprises me, however, is that there are so many really
small areas on this map:

British and Irish linguists should be proud of their work: as
far as I remember, on a similar map for Russia there were areas
larger than some of our biggest regions.

I chose the option that I was born and raised in the UK. My
answers closely match those speakers from central Scotland,
Aberdeen, Belfast, Dumfries and an area in the northeast of
England that appears to be south of Edinburgh.
Is the test of much worth? Who knows.

Same here, Nikola. I laughed with"Definitely not from around
here are you?“
I didn't print the screen, but apparently, my answers were to
closer to people from Sligo (in Ireland), which surprised me.
When I took the American English test, my result was Maine.
It always feels so random.

Erik, were you replying to Kseniia's comment by any chance? She
was the one who mentioned "definitely not from around here". I
don't know whereabouts in Ireland you're based. Did they get it
completely wrong? Was it a near miss?
My results were quite accurate. I lived in London and Tunbridge
Wells, Kent.

@Nikola
Sorry! When I answered this thread, I was probably still
laughing at the “Sasha” brother, so you were in my mind.
I don’t know if I can say if it is accurate or not.
It pointed somewhere in Ireland, which is where I live, so it
can be somewhat accurate. I just have my doubts if my English
would represent that.
Although I’ve been here for some years, I think that I’ve been
much more exposed to English spoken in England in my life
(that’s why my surprise). Maybe the influence is stronger than I
thought.
As for where in Ireland, it’s wrong. I am the East, Sligo is in
the South and I certainly haven’t had much exposure to the way
they speak.

Thanks for sharing your results, everyone.
I was interested to try this out since I've lived in several
different places which have influenced the way I speak in one
way or another. In the end it placed me mostly in Northern
Ireland, with a few scattered blotches in the far north and
midlands of England, and some in Scotland.
I tried it again thinking of the purer dialect in a couple of
the places I've lived for the longest time (how the natives
speak) and got pretty accurate results.
Out of curiosity, I tried it again, but clicked on "I wasn't
raised here but I want to play anyway!" at the beginning. The
response was "Way off. Your answers didnt [sic] fit here at
all." ???
@Kseniia, there are indeed many words specific to a very
restricted geographical area, and I suppose they're mostly words
that don't travel well. For example, the word for giving someone
a ride on your bike: it's an activity that's fairly specific to
children of a certain age. I happened to be living in western
Nottinghamshire at that age, so I'm familiar with the word
"coggy", which I learned from local kids, but I didn't know what
it was called anywhere outside that very small region. But I
also used a lot of anomalous words when I was living there,
which I got from my mother, words like "bap" (I always found the
local word "cob" a bit strange) and "slater" (I don't even know
what they call woodlice there - I mostly talked about them at
home).
@Erik, I know I haven't been there for a while, but have they
moved Sligo?
