Wife Beater

The slang for a man's undershirt is 'wife beater' in the US. The
classic wife beater shirt in the US is white. Other colors just
don't cut it. I'm wondering what they're called in other
countries. I've also noticed that these shirts are quite popular
for everyday public wearing { something that you don't see in
the US } in Russia and the former Soviet countries.

Sadly, there are no interesting synonyms for undershirt -
Unterhemd - in German, and it's just called Leibchen or Leiberl
(little body) in Austrian or Swiss German.
To make it evocative (beer, belly, cigarette), you'd add
Feinripp (fine ribbed).

In French they are called “marcel”
In Italian “canottiera “
In Swiss German “Liebli”

In Russian it's not as harsh as "wife beater" but it's somewhat
similar. The slang for this kind of shirt is
"майка-алкоголичка"
or just
"алкоголичка",
meaning "female alcoholic" - female because the noun
майка (shirt) is feminine. I
wouldn't say it's popular for everyday public wearing nowadays,
though, at least not among men.

Wife beater? A person who beats his wife? Whaaat?
It is called running shirt in Japan. The name is for a underwear
and a sports wear too. It does not mean the shirt is running.
But looking at the marathon race, they look like many shirts are
running.

We normally just call it a "vest". I'm familiar with the term
"wife-beater" but I'm not sure how common it is.

There's a more formal and slightly outdated "nátělník" and
then there's "tílko" which is commonly used for any sleeveless
top or undershirt, whether it's worn by men or women. Both words
are derived from "tělo" = body.
Men wear them here, too. I didn't use to find it strange but
after having lived in the UK, I find it quite unattractive.

In New York they are called "Italian Wife Beater" shirts because
they were associated with Italian immigrants. The association
was so strong that it became Hollywood shorthand, the angry
immigrant character would wear this undershirt.
