Canadians arent beloved, they are just thought well of. As in
"nobody hates Canadians". Like vanilla.
Italy and Ireland are cool. Germany is not. Vienna is the
ultimate hipster destination, maybe Amsterdam and Prague, not
Munich. The Dutch are cool, the English are not. The French
are decidedly not cool. Argentina and Chile are cooler than
Brazil. No place in Africa is cool. Thailand and Cambodia are
cool destinations, India and Vietnam are not. Russians are not
very cool.
There. I speak for all Americans. Confidently.
We think we are pretty cool.

Wonderful, Neil! :-*
Not being as confident as you, I'd tentatively agree to much of
what you said, with a few notable exceptions:
Brazil is definitely MOST cool (and this has got nothing to do
with Allie who isn't just cool because of where she's from, but
cool in her own right, full stop), Chile doesn't even come
close. Not sure about India anymore (sorry, Sunshine!) which
used to be VERY cool, but Vietnam is cool, I think - as seen
from Germany, obviously. Also from a German point of view,
Thailand, beautiful as it is, is far too well-known for its s*x
tourism industry to be considered cool.
Now I'm more interested than ever in re-reading that ****ing
italki discussion about warm vs cool cultures - can't one of you
find it and link to it?
Don't worry, Allie, I'm not in the least offended. For one
thing, because I've been told by countless people from various
countries how cold Germans are. For another, you know, we're
cold, so we don't really mind whether we're perceived as such.
;)

@Erik
I love Black Books. It's possibly my favourite series.
@Alharacas
Is it this discussion?

Yes, exactly, Nikola, that's the one. Thank you very much!
The OP on italki put it quite well, I think, when she wrote:
So, warm cultures focus on relationships above tasks/work, and
don't tend to worry about time.
Cold cultures tend to value efficiency and respecting other
people's time.
Warm cultures are more spontaneous, for example, in hospitality,
and cold cultures prefer planning.
(leans back and waits for other people to point out the obvious
problems and discrepancies ;) )

I am not sure how to answer.
My Norwegian blood propels me to finish the task of answering
your comment in a timely and efficient manner, but the Brazilian
part makes me want to call my mother.
I will probably be spontaneous and post an answer when I feel
like it… around 16:05 if we want to be exact.

Italians are cool because they're chatty happy-go-luckies and
friendly as hell. The Irish and Scots ("wait, aren't they
English?") are cool because they're charismatic angry heavy
drinkers. The English are kind of cool because they're posh as
Colin Firth. The Spanish are cool because they're oh-so-hot
(unfortunately, they're all unemployed, so don't even think
about marrying one!).
[you just listened to my Russian co-workers suggesting I go
anywhere else but China a few years ago]

A Russian, living in China, speaking perfect English with a posh
accent is definitely cool.

Neal, I wish I knew such a person. Bonus stereotype from the
Chinese for you: Americans are cool because they're rich. No,
not just rich, RICH! (Germans are almost as rich, so in summer
white people walking down Nanjing lu wearing T-shirts, shorts
and baseball caps receive dozens of invitations to "traditional
Chinese tea ceremonies", and I've yet to receive one! Life's
unfair).

And what happens if the German or US American accepts such an
invitation, Kseniia?

It must be hard to be a German or American tourist.
They are often seen as moneybags… or not. I guy told me once he
loved that as he was just an average Joe in his homeland, but
when travelling he felt like a rockstar (or a hip hop star or
whatever is in now)
