Why is it forbidden for coworkers to date each other?!

Honestly, I was a bit shocked when I first learned about such a
rule. Do you think rules like this can really keep people from
having romantic relationships in the workplace? :D What would
happen if the authorities found about the love affair between
their employees? Would they lose their jobs over that?

In the U.S. it is not forbidden to date co-workers, in fact, it
happens a lot. (I met my husband when he was a cook and I was a
waitress.) However, it can be dangerous in a serious career
positions, because problems in the relationship can end up with
one person accusing the other of sexual harrassment (which is
against the law) or can just make for a bad working
environment. Consider these more like ¨advice¨ than ¨rules.¨

In countries with different norms, employers may be able to
forbid such relationships. Here they can´t really do so, except
that, for example, in my state you can be terminated for any
reason. So, if the boss thinks your relationship could cause a
problem, you might lose your job.

Where I leave it is not forbidden. It was actually the best way
to find a partner (before Tinder). That’s how I met my husband,
at work. However some firms forbid couples to work together or
in the same unit. They are afraid of some possible collusion.
But it can also be a big problem if the two are in the same
field of work but in two different enterprises who are competing
one against the other!

Thanks for the links, Wendy. They provide some good advice for
people who want to date their co-workers. When I was watching an
American TV series, I came to realize that dating your co-worker
in some special places might cause you trouble. It was so
interesting how they were trying to keep their relationship
secret and acted as if there was nothing going on between them.
There were some scenes that absolutely made me laugh. But it's
quite understandable as to why some employers set some strict
rules on such relationships. Their business could be ruined for
people not doing their jobs properly.

@Sofia
Most of my co-workers are females. I only have some male
colleagues who are all married with kids. It's OK with me
because I'm not much interested in gossips told behind people in
a secret relationship. Anyway, I agree that the workplace could
be a good place to meet one's future spouse.

It's not forbidden here but I can see how it can lead to serious
problems in a workplace. First of all, strong emotions (both
positive and negative) will cloud one's judgment. The more
responsibility you have, the more you should watch out for it.
Secondly, intimate relations, coteries and closed circles lead
to suspicions, misunderstandings and conflicts of interests.
Well, there's more but I hate typing on a phone; I'm sure you
get what I want to say.
From my perspective: I work almost exclusively with men and I
can't imagine having a romantic relationship in such
surroundings. This would automatically put me in a role of a
woman in a men's world. And that's the last thing I need. At
work I'm a worker. That's how it should be.

Where I am from, it depends on the company.
Some have rules against, some don’t.
Good that you mentioned series, @Moonlight.
Employees sneaking around the work place and getting physical
the way we see in rom coms is strictly forbidden (you lose your
job, your rights and may have problems to find another one).
I like what Marmolada said. Even if relationships were allowed,
it’s kind of common sense to avoid them (there’s even a saying
about it “onde se come o pão, não se come a carne”).

@Marmlada
I can get what you mean and also believe that work should be
placed over personal relationships. But sometimes it's
inevitable to have a crush on one's colleague. Feelings develop
in the course of time no matter how strictly the rules set
against romantic relationships between co-workers. That being
said, I admit that I myself wouldn't really like to experience
office romance. That's not just for me. But again, I'm not
against it, either.
@Erik
Thanks for sharing your opinion with us. I just didn't know that
Martians had such rules, too. :)

Where I've worked it was mostly just frowned upon. It never
stopped me.
