Verbal Abuse on EGP

What happened recently got me thinking about whether we should
be allowed to say anything we feel like on this forum. I love
the freedom of speech and ongoing banter here but I feel that
severe verbal abuse, such as name calling, is just not
acceptable, no matter what led up to it.
I think it would be fair to set some basic rules, ones that
wouldn't affect the enjoyment we all get from posting here.
Something as simple as "Users are allowed to tease and criticize
others but verbal abuse such as threats or name calling will not
be tolerated. If you respond to a comment posted in accordance
with these rules, by threatening or name calling, you may be
asked to apologize publicly. If you refuse to apologize, you
will be banned."
In addition, should the person feel they're being treated
unfairly, they can "appeal" and let other users decide through a
poll, whether they should be banned or not.
What do you think about this?

A part of me liked the idea of having no rules or almost none
(for the record, I am still against the p***a t******gs ban),
and I believed that there are things you don't really need to
explain.
In the light of current events, I think this suggestion is sound
and appropriate.

I think the only thing that should be banned is Pi**a To**ings.
Everything else I think we can still leave up to common sense.
I definitely don't want an appeal vote because then everyone has
to know everything about the case and etc... what a mess.
A benevolent dictatorship will be fine.

their opinion, I shall consider implementing some persuasion
strategies, which may involve yelling random insults at people
in order to prove my point.

Why not?
I volunteer myself to be offended. If you want, I can even make
a fuss, report you and ensure measures are taken.
If it happens to someone else, though, I will play the better
person and preach forgiveness.

I'm in two minds about it. Had it been another person, I
probably wouldn't even have asked them to apologise - just spit
on their avatar and move on. But I don't live in a vacuum and I
have good memory so for me this wasn't an isolated thing.
Anyway, my point is that normally I'm quite permissive.
And I think that not calling anyone a cunt is just common sense.
You don't really need to write it down. But then again, creating
rules ad hoc leads to situations like this: people not
understanding why on earth a user has been banned. So maybe it
should be written down, warnings sent and publicly seen, and
after having gotten three of them you're officially out. This
would make it clearer. I mean - that one's actions will have
consequences (I don't think shl was aware of that).

I am strong proponent of anarchy on the internet and against
enforcing any rules. I don't believe in a benevolent
dictatorships.
