       Frequent mistakes - häufige Fehler: sollen vs. sollten

       The other day, I tried to point out the different uses of sollen
       and sollten for one of my language partners. Since using sollen
       (instead of sollten) is one of the more frequent mistakes
       non-native speakers of German make, I thought I'd copy it in
       here.
       Questions/suggestions are welcome, of course!
       sollen
       - hearsay
       "Der Iran soll landschaftlich sehr schön sein." (Never been to
       Iran, but that's what I've heard.)
       Most commonly used for
       A)
       - reporting somebody else's order
       "Was hat denn der Arzt gesagt?" - "Ich soll abnehmen und weniger
       rauchen."
       "Wir sollen die Arbeit am nächsten Ersten abgeben." (no need to
       add that this is what the boss/teacher/professor said, as
       "sollen" clearly indicates somebody else's order)
       B)
       - in offers, where you'd say "do you want me to...?" in English
       "Soll ich hier auf Dich warten?"
       "Soll ich Tom anrufen, oder machst Du das?"
       "Soll ich Dir helfen, oder kannst Du das alleine?"
       Sometimes used when
       - you've already been told (not) to do something
       "Hey, Du sollst doch die Türe abschließen, wenn Du weggehst!"
       (doch - here: indication that I'd told you this before)
       You wouldn't use it to order somebody around (you could, but
       it's unidiomatic) - the first time round I'd either have said
       "Du mußt die Türe abschließen, wenn Du weggehst"/"Du darfst die
       Türe nicht offenlassen, wenn Du weggehst" (both very strong and
       rather impolite), or "Du solltest (wirklich) die Türe
       abschließen, wenn Du weggehst" (polite suggestion, see below)
       sollten
       1. Vergangenheit von "sollen"
       2. Konjunktiv II
       - recommendation, it is or would be a pretty good idea (not) to
       do something
       "Dein Husten wird nicht besser. Du solltest wirklich mal zum
       Arzt gehen."
       "Man sollte nicht zu viele Projekte auf einmal anfangen."
       Can also be used when talking about something you yourself
       should do:
       "Ich sollte wohl mal wieder meinen Schreibtisch aufräumen."

       Grundsätzlich ist es so, daß wir uns bemühen, andere Leute
       sprachlich nicht herumzukommandieren. Wir bevorzugen daher
       "sollten" und "müßten", auch "könnten", wenn wir jemanden um
       etwas bitten, also "Könntest Du bitte X tun?" oder "Könnten Sie
       mir sagen...".
