Re: Audiobooks: the big success. A new form of art/ of listening

Neal, maybe this article will explain to you enough about using
a translation dictionary with your Kindle. First, you need to
buy one of the translation dictionaries. Then there is a step
where you need to make that dictionary the default one instead
of the one that came loaded on your Kindle. If I remember
correctly, the different models of Kindles may have different
instructions for this.
HTML https://www.fluentu.com/blog/kindle-foreign-language-dictionary/<br
/> (I think I bought three translation dictionaries and went wit
h
the one I liked best in Spanish. The ones I chose were cheap
but work quite well.)
The thing I love most about my Kindle is using it to read in my
target language. I have a Spanish-English translation
dictionary loaded as the default, so I just point to the Spanish
word and it gives me the English definition.
I have a Kindle Fire and a Kindle Paperwhite. I may be able to
help you figure it out if I knew what version you have. It does
just translate a word at a time though-- it is not like you can
take an English book and read it in the other language.

@Susan
@ Neal
I wonder if it depends on the model of Kindle you have. I have a
Paperwhite, probably three years old with internet connection
via WiFi. The device downloads the updates automatically.
Recently there was one which redesigned the whole display.
I have 19 dictionaries. I only bought two of them. The 17 others
were free!
I renounced to download Russian, Greek, Japanese and probably
Mandarin.
How did I do it? I read the User’s Manual when I bought the
device and registered to Amazon. So I really do not know anymore
how it went. Meanwhile the manual changed. But I will check.
One thing that is important is also to download all keyboards of
the languages you want to use.
There is no definite default language on my Kindle. I probably
set it to French, since it is the language I use in my everyday
life at the moment. If I click on a word it gives me first the
definition in the language it is written.
For instance in Spanish: a dictionary similar to the RAE, but
immediately I can change dictionary to a Spanish-English
(downloaded for free from the Kindle operating system) or to a
Spanish-Italian that I bought.

I checked my Manual. Too complicated to translate it to English.
Looked on Google. The easiest explanation is the one I found on
this website

Anyway, it's hard to explain, but for me listening to audiobooks
is in some way similar to listening to music: if you know how to
read musical notes, you might be able to imagine what every
orchestral instrument sound like and play the whole symphony in
your head — but if there's a musician I like who can play the
same symphony brilliantly on the piano, I might want to listen
to their performance instead (or as well). I'm actually fine
with not being in control when someone who is in control is
really good at what they're doing.

Kseniia, that’s so interesting. Great way to enjoy audiobooks,
it is a completely new dimension you are describing here. The
analogy to listening music, just let it be and let it go.
Remaining in control is a good thing to master one’s life but
loosing control opens new perspectives, new experiences and is
sometimes absolutely necessary to fully enjoy some form of art
in a more...I would say “sensual” way.
