What the hell is happening in the UK?
By: NealC Date: December 11, 2018, 11:54 am

What is the problem for May and the whole Brexit thing?
What is Commons so up in arms about?
Why did that guy try to take the Mace out yesterday?
While I love watching clips of the House of Commons and
"Questions to the Prime Minister" is one of my favorite British
Comedy shows I cannot understand what is going on right now.
Too bad Michael Chambers isn't here to straighten me out.
Can anyone one else enlighten me?

This is a quote from a BBC article on the transition period,
i.e. what's going to happen right now, if May's Brexit-deal goes
through:
"The details of transition aren't new but they are no less
awkward for that. At a time when the government wants to trumpet
that it is taking back control (its slogan, not mine), it will
be ceding control for 21 months and very possibly longer. There
will be no UK presence in the European Parliament, at the top
table of the European Commission or in the European Court of
Justice.
The UK will have no formal say in making or amending EU rules
and regulations, but it will have to follow them to the letter.
The great advantage of transition, of course, is that it buys
more time for businesses and governments to prepare for a new
regime, and it smoothes the path out of the EU. Transition also
gives the UK continued access to EU databases on crucial issues
like security while a future relationship is negotiated."
That means it's business as usual for the next 2 years (give or
take a few months), with Schengen and the customs union
remaining as they were - only Great Britain isn't going to have
any say anymore in the EU. Which sounds pretty awful, until you
consider that the alternative would be erecting border control
posts overnight in people's back gardens, along the border
between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. (Add to
this the fact that both Northern Ireland and Scotland voted in
favour of remaining in the EU, and you've got the spectre of a
disintegrating Great Britain rising fast.)
The ceremonial Mace is a kind of symbol for the power of
law-making - which is presumably why this guy wanted to take it
away from May.
My personal favourite is the fact that Great Britain will now
have to find and hand back the estimated 39 billion pounds they
owe the EU. Yeah, if I were one of the idiot politicians who'd
kept feeding the British public lies about what oodles of money
could be spent on the voters in general and the chronically
ailing National Health Service in particular, if only Great
Britain didn't have to pay so much into the gaping maws of the
EU, I'd be bloody furious now, too. ;D

What did Britain have to accept in immigration in order to stay
in the EU? Because it seems that was a big reason for them to
exit. They talk about not liking all the regulation out of
Brussels but Britain is one of the worst nanny states in Europe.
I heard the promises of all the money they were going to save
all the way over here. Funny how that is not going to work out
:-)

Things aren't looking good for UK. Clocks are ticking down 29th
of March in near no one likes May's deal time for new
negotiation is running out. She is probably going to lose her
post but I doubt new PM will be better. UK will probably end up
crashing out of EU without a deal and break apart.

Pasha,
I just read on my ZDF pop up that May is going to be subject to
a no confidence vote. There goes her crummy brexit deal.

I think you might be right Pasha. If they don't have a deal by
now it is unlikely they will by March 29. So then Britain exits
the EU with no deal, and Scotland/Northern Ireland might want to
exit the UK.

The British empire messed up with lots of countries and now they
are messing up with their own.

Don't worry, NealC, nobody has the faintest idea what's going
on, not even the people who are in charge of Brexit.

Although there is chance that May's deal still could go
through. Even if the House doesn't like the deal "No deal" would
be worse so they would probably choose the lesser evil.
