Steve you would be much better off if you pointed to Europe, to
Germany for instance. These are capitalist countries with the
level of social benefits you find attractive. We could argue
then on the right mix of freedom and government, and you would
not have to defend the sh*t holes you waste your time defending.
Socialism's weakness is the tendency to totalitarianism. There
are no shining examples of socialist countries, they begin with
thievery and often end in blood.
The weakness inherent in capitalism is a different sort of
corruption, the tendency of money to buy power. Crony
capitalism, the tying together of government and big business,
kleptocracy and oligarchy. Just like every other thing man
touches capitalism needs vigilance and the rule of law to
       protect against its excesses.
I myself want to be as free as possible, to have a chance to
       make the best life possible.

Neal, I don`t disagree at all about wanting a life as free as
possible (even though the term „free“ is a bit vague) and I
definitely agree on wanting the chance to make the best life
possible. I`m with you on that 100%. I think we only disagree on
       how to get there.
But, there are those who say socialism has never really been
tried in any country, which led to oppression in an effort to
have it tried by force. That, of course, backfired. But, by the
same token, there aren`t too many countries I can think of that
are truly capitalist (Mexico comes to mind, Peru maybe). Under
the true capitalist system, what you end of with is enormous
gaps between rich and poor and no one in between. So, the rich
in Mexico, are really rich and live in palaces and drive Rolls
Royces. And the poor are just beggars trying to bum a pero off
every car stopped at a stop light by washing the
       drivers`windows.
What´s going on in Germany and the rest of the EU is sort of a
blend between capitalism and socialism. There`s enough
capitalism to keep people incentivised and enough socialism to
prevent people from being homeless or starving on the streets.
The US is a less developed model, but similar. The fire
department doesn`t send you a bill for coming out and preventing
your home or business from being destroyed by a fire. The police
don`t send you a bill for having come and investigated a break-
in at your home or business.
So, it´s sort of a blend of the two, and I assume that is what
       you were getting at.
I suppose you can turn a blind eye to Cuba, but it`s a hard sell
to say Cuba was better before Castro. Batista was pretty bad and
a dictator. And, most of the people really were just extremely
poor peasant share-croppers on sugar plantations. I read once
them described as toothless farmers out in the fields who just
died in their 50s due to no healthcare. The conditions being as
bad as they were is what led to Castro`s rise in the first
       place.

       @SHL
If you like Cuban music, you should watch a film by Wim Wenders,
(one of my favorite movie directors, by the way he is German :)
), called “ Buena Vista Social Club”. He made the film at the
end of the 90ies. The group was amazing. The musicians were all
in their eighties when they were rediscovered, they were invited
to sing even at the Carnegie Hall, I saw them in Europe at
       different open air festivals.
Here on YouTube an hour of their songs

The film still is under copyright, so I do not know where to
       find it.

And if you like more dynamic music, then listen to Isaac Delgado
“la vida es un Carnaval “ who defines very well the state of
mind of the Cubans that stayed on the island, after the terrible
“periodo especial” when the URSS fell apart and the island
       suffered from the US blockade.
The songs tells: life is like a Carnival, one never should cry,
since life is a Carnival and all the pain desappears if you sing
       and dance.

Strange, I wrote those two posts and edited them afterwards.
Now they aren’t visible anymore for guests. I can see them if I
am logged in. Reminds me of Italki. But surely there is an
       explanation.

But giving Reagan credit for anything is absurd. He killed more
people due to his refusal to adequately respond to the AIDS
epidemic through denial and lack of government funding than the
total of men who died in the Vietnam War.

And please, learned counselor, would you direct me to the clause
in the US Constitution that commands the US president to take
charge of medical problems? Thank you, I'll be waiting for your
       creative bs on this one.
