This way every time the parents call her name they can be
reminded of the bitterness they carry over the cost of her
       birth.

Susan`s story reminds me of the wackiness of the USA. Wow.
       Alharacas,
Thanks for the information about German naming traditions. I
always wondered why my great-grandfather on my mother`s side was
Friedrich Albert Hermann Garlichs, and he named his kids, I
guess the sons anyway, with three first names too. I always
wondered about that. I thought it was just an old-fashioned way
of doing things, but I suppose not. They seemed to love the
name Hermann in that family, so that carried down all the way.
It was interesting. The last name always through people in the
US off, because they always missprounced it. When my grandmother
died, there went the name, because my mom uses her married name.
There`s actually, much to my surprise, a German (not English)
Wikipedia article on the last name, which is most common in the
Witmund/Jever area of Ostfriesland, which is why I travel to
Jever every year. It`s sort of a way of getting in touch with my
roots so-to-speak. To this day, there`s about 6 families with
this last name in Jever, and a few in Wittmund. But, Jever is
one of my favorite places in Germany. Itīs a really cute town.

In the U.S. the middle name is often used as an honorific. My
son's middle name is Joseph, to honor his maternal grandfather
       [/quote]
My middle name is the name of my grandmother who passed away few
       days before my birth.
I didn't follow the tradition with my own children though.
