I`m not surprised by the story. Southwest is a budget airline
with a lot of lousy employees. You should hear the air traffic
controller video captured of a Southwest captain talking to his
co-pilot on a flight from Chicago (I think) on an open mike
(mistakenly left open and live) complaining there weren`t
enough „hot“ flight attendants on so many of his flights. He
said he was on one „with just a granny and a host of fags.“
Yeah, that`s Southwest`s professionalism for you.

Has anybody an idea what Abseedee should mean?
Poor girl with such a name.
Of course the employee did something illegal.

In the US, it`s quite common for people to invent unusual names
for their children and the spellings can be anything. I see this
all the time. That´s why always ASK how the child`s name is
spelled. Allison with one „l“ or two (like Alison)? Or Keisha.
Is it Kiescheah, Kiescha, Keischa? You just never know. Just as
English is non-phonetic, the spellings, especially nowadays, of
the names of children can be very unusual. They are just pure
       inventions of the parents.
I wouldn`t say what the ticket agent did here was illegal (as in
criminal), but it would certainly be good reason for the airline
to terminate the employee. Without looking back at the article
again, didn`t the ticket agent take a photo of the name of the
child and post it on Facebook? How deplorable. That would be
grounds for a civil lawsuit against the agent personally, along
with the airline. It wouldn`t surprise me if a lawsuit weren`t
       filed over the incident.

I wonder why her parents chose the name "Abcde"!? I mean okay,
they can whatever they want but seriously? I don't know whether
I should pronounce it A-B-C-D-E or Ab-city as the employee
pronounced or Ab-cidy. But that's not appreciated if the
employee really made them feel uncomfortable, they should know
how to deal with customer even if it is something not common.

       Sudeep,
Like I said, people in the US just want to be different very
often, and pick odd names for their kids and make up odd
spellings. Think of it like a personalized license plate for
your car or something. It`s a but like that.

In Poland, you can't give your child a name that could harm them
in the future. A name like that wouldn't be accepted.
About the airline story - there is a difference between
inadvertently broadcasting your private conversation and openly
ridiculing a customer face to face. The first case is just
unfortunate but forgiveable, the latter is not. You really don't
want to have morons as your first representatives when dealing
       with the customers.

Nor in Germany. Which I've always thought was fortunate in the
case of the child whose parents tried to have it named Pumuckl,
       after a gnome in a well-known children's book.

I have heard of restrictions in Europe on certain names not
being allowed to be given children. Most people in the US don`t
choose weird names like abcde or so other odd spellings of a
name, but again I`m not aware of any law on the subject in
California. There are laws pertaining to not using certain names
on personalized license plates for cars, but that`s about it.
       It`s an interesting idea though.
