World map of racism

Painting Germany light blue seems overly optimistic. I wonder
how they got their data. And - which race? Just not any other?
Or a specific one?
Do you think your country got the right colour?

I wouldn’t trust this kind of survey. We do not know anything
about the methodology. Well, about the light blue
Switzerland...there was yesterday a vote against a populist
initiative and the majority of the people rejected it.
As for unwanted neighbors, I once shared a terrasse with some
Portuguese neighbors who used to grill sardines on the terrasse
the whole year long. I still can feel the smell. I hate it. They
were nice and even invited me to share the sardines with them.
So I would try to avoid neighbors who barbecue sardines. Am I
considered a racist?

I can certainly understand bigotry against people who barbecue
sardines in public
Who can stand the Portuguese anyway? You have them stuck in the
western corner of Europe for a reason i'm sure.

That would be stretching it, Sofia, I think. ;)
Actually, the whole concept of human "races" feels really wrong
to me, but I suppose that's me being German again.

Portugal is in the western part of Europe on the Atlantic Ocean,
that’s why they were such good navigators. They have two really
good features: the Fado songs (heartbreaking sad and nostalgic)
and the writer Pessoa.

I think that map would be a shock to my teachers in Venezuela.
I have brought up the subject of racism with many of them and
they all insist that racism is not a problem in Venezuela like
it is here in the U.S. If I am reading the graphics right, that
map would suggest the opposite-- that Venezuela has the most
racist attitudes in both the American continents.

Susan, this is what wikipedia has to say about the subject:

And I found this article quite interesting:

Maybe what your teachers say is a case of wishful thinking?

I think I saw this map someplace before, but forgot where.
It`s hard to know what to make of it, particularly without
knowing more about the survey and what the definitions of
„persons of another race“ were. Oddly enough, India, looks the
the most racist of all, coming in alone as a solid red. That
itself ought to make you wonder about the methodology of the
study and the definitions used. It would especially be
interesting to know whom the people of India were thinking of as
those of „another race“ in answering the story. Blacks? Asians?
Whites?
That Venezuela came out as highest on the chart in Latin America
is interesting, as is Alharacas`s link, which I read. But, the
theme of „whiteness“ having status in Latin America doesn`t
really surprise me. Thinking of Mexico in particular, I always
knew that this was true among at least some people. The
political figures and those in places of power and position very
frequently look much more European in ancestry than the vast
majority of the population, if you`ve ever noticed (the
remaining population being something of a blend I suppose of
native Indian and Spanish, or other European ancestry). I know
my ex-wife was extremely biased in favor of white men, or better
said, those of European ancestry, even though she was Mexican
herself. She wouldn`t even date a Mexican or Latin American
guy, or anyone who sort of fit that Mestizo „look“ (I think
that`s what they call it- it seems odd just even saying it). She
doesn`t look exactly Mestizo herself, because her father had
some French background. But the bias was very apparent. (Mexico
had some French presence at one time, and German as well, which
is why beer became so popular down there. In fact, Mexico`s
Cinco de Mayo holiday it one of the dummest things in the world.
It celebrates a battle won against the French in a war they
ultimately lost. Who celebrates something like that??)
My ex was so fanatic about this she would never even let my kids
out in the sun without hats on, for fear they might get a
suntan.(I`m serious. This is the wackiness I`ve had to deal with
in my life.) All this is bringing back these strange memories
now, that go back over 20 years. Oh, and my boys and daughter,
along with the hats, had to have the strongest possible
sunscreen on if they went outdoors. She didn`t want that pale
white skin of theirs running the risk of getting tanned in the
slightest way. I really always thought that was because she was
afraid her genetic background would make them tan easily or
something. My god, what a nightmare (she actually tanned fairly
easily, where I didn`t, or if I did get a tan it was gone in a
day).
Neal and Jerry are probably thinking, „Yeah, I can imagine
someone like that marrying SHL..“
So, yes. That Mexico and Central and South America came in a
little on the biased side doesn`t totally surprise me, (biased
is probably a better word than „racist“). This is an interesting
read on the „mestizo“ concept:

WOW! India is painted with red hot chili ;D In India, I wouldn't
say it is racism(it may not be the correct word because it is
considered that most of the Indians are of same race, actually
two, Dravidian and Ariyan) but there are some other issues that
make it looks like India is a racist country. Firstly, the skin
tone. You may find girls having dark complexion often feel
uncomfortable due to the society who love their daughter or son
to be born with fair complexion. You can come across tons of
fairness cream advisement(both for man and woman). I can't say
when people will get rid of this inferiority complex due to dark
skin mentality! So, yes, a boy/girl having dark skin complexion
may face discrimination than a fairy one.
Second thing is caste system of India. This caste system, when
created in the ancient time, was not to discriminate people
rather it was to label people according to their jobs. There are
four castes i.e., Brahmins, Kashtriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras.
Brahmins are those who work as worshiper in the temples and do
all the rituals and teaching. Kashtriyas are those who fight in
the battle, the army you can say. Vaishya are those who do,
agriculture, trade and business. And Sudras are those who worked
as cleaner, sweeper, chauffeur etc. So, this was the hierarchy
made according to their work, but then people have it in them to
feel superior and consider others inferior. So, the Brahmin was
considered as the higher caste and the Sudra was considered as
the lower caste and often called as untouchable. Anyway, but the
picture is changing as education can caste the light to people's
ignorance and inferiority. But still, this caste system exist
and have not gone entirely from people's mentality especially
from those who live in villages and less educated. Indian
government is equally responsible for the survival of this caste
system. They have this quota system for getting a job or a seat
in a good (government)college. If someone belongs to the
ST/SC(schedule tribe/schedule caste)["The Scheduled Castes (SCs)
and Scheduled Tribes (STs) are officially designated groups of
historically disadvantaged people in India. The terms are
recognized in the Constitution of India and the groups are
designated in one or other of the categories."], they get 40 to
50% reservation but those who belong to general category don't
get anything. For example, an exam is conducted to get a job in
some government institution and the exam is for 100 marks. And
every category has a cut off mark(if you get that mark, you are
qualified!). For general category, it might be 70 but for SC/ST
that mark be 40. So, that's unfair because a Sc/ST candidate get
the job only by securing 40 mark whereas a general category
candidate can't get it if they get slightly less than 70 . The
government is not removing it just to secure the vote bank and
they know if they try to talk to remove it, then their
government would not come next time or even get toppled.
So, that's the picture of India. I can't say it's racist but
yes, discrimination exist if not as it used to 50 years ago.
