AKK

Now, I may be getting a little ahead of myself here, but it
looks as if in a couple of years we might be getting a different
chancellor. Did I hear you say that's definitely too far ahead
for you to be interested? Nope. Believe me, you're going to need
at least that much time to come to grips with her name. She's
the female German equivalent of Grzegorz
Brzęczyszczykiewicz, except that native Polish speakers
don't find his name half as difficult to pronounce as we find
hers.
Ladies and Gentlemen, let me present... Annegret
Kramp-Karrenbauer. So, let's practice a little, okay? Ready?
Here we go. Her first name is pronounced /unnegreat/. Her last
name ought to sound more or less like /crump-currenbower/. Now,
we'll take it slowly at first: un-ne-great crump-curren-bow-er.
You okay with that? Try to say it more quickly. No? Yeah.
That's why they've already taken to calling her AKK,
/uh-car-car/, on TV. German state TV, that is.
Call me squeamish, but I'm not really looking forward to having
a head of government who's going to be called by what sounds
like a pet name for a machine gun.
On the other hand, we might get to have lots of fun along the
lines of this popular German sketch (no, you aren't going to
find it funny. But then, that's what our sense of humour is
famous for):

AKK should change her name. Poor TV anchormen and anchorwomen.
Well Americans will not make a big effort to get it straight.
Actually isnt AK + something the name of an automatic rifle or
machine gun?
P.S, please make a German transcription of the name of this
polish politician.
Or even better, maybe Marmolada records it on Forvo, please.

Sofia,
You`ll have to ask Neal about those machine guns, the AKs or
whatever. Wasn’t his an AC22 or something wacky like that?
Typical Americans. Ugh.
Helmut Schmidt. A fantastic German Chancellor. Too bad we can`t
bring him back from the grave (of course he’d be about 100 now)
and watch him chain-smoke those cigarettes, like he did up to
age 96. He had lungs and a body that would take a „licking and
keep on ticking“ (that`s a US advertisement for something I
forgot at the moment, like some kind of batteries of
something??Help me out Neal or Jerry, or Susan).

This is one reason I love German. Her name looks like she`d be a
wheelbarrow manufacturer prone to cramps or seizures, but then
that would be „Krämpfe“, but close. Oh well.
Some of those names are great. Like the deceased US singer John
Denver, changed his name from his birthname of John
Deutschendorf to avoid perplexing Americans.

Sofia, I'm sorry, I should have said - the guy is not a
politician, he appears in a famous scene in the movie "How I
Unleashed World War II":

A German transcription would look more or less like this:
/grschegorsch brschöntschüshtschükjewitsch/, but the /ön/ is
nasal like the "ean" in French "Jean", and also, the Polish "cz"
is a soft /tsch/ (with the /sch/-sound as in French "mange"),
while "sz" is a sharp /sch/ (which is why I wrote it as "sh").

The AK-47 is the Soviet Assault Rifle, literally hundreds of
millions made. it is cheap, reliable and ubiquitous. Every
revolutionaries dream. It is a copy of the German STG 44, the
Assault Rifle the SS armed themselves with at the end of World
War II. The '44 and '47 are the dates of design.
"Takes a licking and keeps on ticking" is Timex, the watch
manufacturer.

Thanks Neal, yeah that`s it. Those cheap-a*s Timex watches.
But listen to you going on about all these guns. I thought you
were a man of peace? All these gun expert guys remind me of the
caliber of types that hang out at all the local gun shows,
enjoying all the firepower chit chat.

I'm not much of a gun nut, but the Sturmgewehr 44 is military
history, the world's first modern military assault rifle. The
difference between it and preceding automatic military weapons
is the STG 44 uses full rifle ammunition, not smaller pistol
rounds like the American Thompson, the British Sten, the Russian
ppsh, or the German MP40.
First prototypes were shown to Hitler in 1943, he passed on them
as he felt automatic weapons had a too reduced range, and taught
soldiers to waste ammunition. Some of them were produced
regardless and they made their way to SS units on the Russian
Front. Hitler was speaking to some SS men, heroes being
decorated for bravery and he asked them "What can we do to help
you boys at the front?". Instead of the typical, polite
"Nothing, everything is swell!" Hitler received a candid answer
"Send us more of the new assault rifles, they scare the sh*t out
of the Russians"! I'm sure someone had a few uneasy moments
when Hitler looked around and asked "What assault rifles?" But
in the end they got them out to the soldiers as soon as
possible, thank goodness too few and too late to make much
difference in the war.
I play the German SS when we game WWII small units, and I pay
extra points to get STG's for my boys. Makes the enemy have a
bad day. :-)

Fascinating, all this gun history, Neal. Just fascinating.
