       Are you polite?
By: Allie Date: October 30, 2018, 8:58 am

I used to think politeness was more or less the same thing all
over the world, but, while I still assume that saying "thanks"
and "sorry" are pretty much standard, there are so many points
       that vary.
I've been "impolite" in other countries or dealing with
foreigners a couple of times while thinking that I was actually
being polite. I've seen the opposite happening too. Has it
       happened to you?
Of course I will give you some examples. Here they are:
1 - Irish people are usually warm and polite. Sometimes when I
enter a place and I see someone I know and they are busy or
talking to someone, I don't greet them. I learned that you
should not interrupt when someone is busy, but I realised that
it actually gives the impression I am ignoring them or even that
I am angry with them (!)
2 - Many were the times I heard people complaining about being
interrupted while talking, but where I am from, if you just
listen passively, without interacting, you're signalising lack
of interest. So, if you are talking and someone makes
observations, starts telling their own stories or adding to
yours, it actually means they like the conversation. By the end
of a good conversation, you may have started 5 five stories and
not finished a single one and that's good! On the other hand, if
you managed to talk for hours on end without interruption, I am
sorry to tell you your interlocutor was probably sleeping

In some areas of the world it's considered polite to belch
loudly and often during a meal. Call me impolite in this case.

When being polite is similar to good behaviors, everything goes
well. But sometimes being polite causes some silly obedience.
Japanese people are said very polite. Sometimes they ( includes
me) are idiots and don't have various thought. They are likely
to behave same as the others since they think it is polite. So
they're prone to obey well their supervisors, people of high
position without doubting. This is why we had long period of 200
years of Edo as you know sumurai time. Of course, the Imperial
Family has continued more than 1500 years. It's the longest of
       the world.

Thanks, guys! (See? I am being polite ;) )
       @Truman
You’re destroying the gentleman image I have of you
       @Chizuko
That’s a very interesting comment. If it’s any consolation (if
we can call it so), people in other places behave and think all
the same as well, but for different reasons. In the west we
       usually blame media.
But back to your original comment, yes, Japanese people are seem
as extremely polite. I’ve heard a lot about punctuality,
cleanliness, silence and sense of hierarchy.
