How many people love the piano here?
By: SHL Date: September 15, 2018, 2:40 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Unlike my fellow inhabitant of this rotten country, the USA,
Jerry and Neal, I`m a very cultured person who appreciates the
fine arts (not like money hungry capitalist) and my favorite
       instrument is the piano.
This is a beautiful clip of a great solo piano performance by
Marie Digby, who`s American (the father is American and the
mother Japanese) and she sings like an angel and plays the piano
       like a master. She’s playing a Japanese piano, a Yamaha I think
(I don’t think much of Japanese products), although it still
sound good. It’s not as good as the Austrian Bösendorfer from
Wien, or the German Steinweg (Steinway) but it sounds good.
Anyone else a piano fan? If not what (don’t expect Neal or Jerry
to answer because they`re not into anything but Pro-Trump
       politics)?

She's very talented and has a beautiful voice but I don't like
the piano sound. Steinway gives a richer sound from the wood,
       in my opinion.
It is disingenuous at best to call Steinway a German company.
They are based right here on Long Island, pride of Astoria.

       Neal,
Steinway was founded by a German family and they still maintain
a manufacturing plant in Hamburg, although it`s true they’ve had
one in New York for a while (I didn’t think one on Long Island).
I don’t like Japanese anything frankly, cars, musical
instruments anything. I wish we could put tariffs on just Japan
only and mess up their economy like they messed up the US
       economy in the 80s.

I frankly think few compare with Nina Simone in her rendition of
Someone to Watch over Me here, playing a Bösendorfer in 1987.
       Fantastic performance.

Not so many. I don't care and I count for 44 people so you do
       the math.

They HAVE one in New York, had it since the 1850's, New York has
been the main office of the company since inception. Long
Island location in Queens since the 1870's.
Factory in Hamburg was built in 1880 to avoid high import taxes
       into Europe.
Sorry Steve, it is an American company. Boo hoo

Hm, well, technically, I'd say it IS debatable whether to call
Steinway an - originally - German or US company:
"Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg first made pianos in the 1820s from
his house in Seesen, Germany.[34] He made pianos under the
Steinweg brand until he emigrated from Germany to America in
1850 with his wife and eight of his nine children.[35] The
eldest son, C. F. Theodor Steinweg, remained in Germany, and
continued making the Steinweg brand of pianos, partnering with
Friedrich Grotrian, a piano dealer, from 1856 to 1865.[36]
In 1853, Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg founded Steinway & Sons.
His first workshop in America was in a small loft at the back of
85 Varick Street in the borough of Manhattan in New York
City.[37] The first piano made by Steinway & Sons was given the
number 483 because Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg had built 482
       pianos in Germany."

Yes, but after the father's death his last remaining child in
Germany sold his share of the German business and came to the US
to become president of Steinway and Sons. Then under his
leadership they set up the Astoria (NY) factory and later back
       to Hamburg.
Originally the craftsmen were all German, mostly from the rather
large founding family. But that is not the case anymore.

       Alharacas,
Thank you for correcting Neal on the error of his ways. He
thinks he knows everything about everything.
I prefer to call them Steinweg pianos myself, instead of their
anglicized name. And you are right, Grotrian was the other one
involved (I read this once) and I think they have a Grotrian
factory today in Braunschweig, where I used to work. But,
somehow it`s all connected business-wise. Steinweg is not a
strictly American company, in spite of the NY connection.

       Here’s the link www.grotrian.de
See, it IS in Braunschweig where I used to work (I didn’t work
there but in a supermarket), but this is a high class operation.
Don`t listen to Neal and his ramblings and him criticizing my
       English.
       It`s Grotrian-Steinweg, the company name.
