We had almost forgotten the day when there were not restrictions
upon the advertisement and sale of cigarettes to children.
Banning all the restaurants from marketing to children in
unhealthy manner does not seem to be in the category of
dangerous government to me. Personally, I would prefer they
banned the use of hydrogenated oils in food, but I know
realistically that is not going to happen in my lifetime.
Companies use them because it is a cheap and effective way to
make an unhealthy product that lasts longer. If they were
banned entirely from use in food, the food might cost just a bit
more, but we would all benefits because the companies would make
better, healthier products. But God forbid we infringe on
anyone´s right to have the texture of donut they have learned to
       love.

I'm pretty old and I don't ever remember when it was legal to
market cigs to minors. There may not have been a law proscribing
the adverts but that doesn't mean that it was done, to the best
of my knowledge and recollection. Besides, ID laws for all
tobacco purchases have been on the books for years. I remember
the days when parents would send their kids to the store to buy
smokes for them. I'm sure there that not all of the cigs went
back home to mom and dad. But then again, I never saw 8
year-olds standing around smoking or chewing tobacco, either.
You can say goodbye to McDonald's and all fast food restaurants
if the food police grab even more power to limit our choices.
It's no secret that restaurant choice and purchases are driven
by kids and young adults. I certainly don't think Happy Meals
are a wise food choice. I always like to ask what would be the
reaction of the pro-banning crowd when THEY are targeted? Of
course, THEY don't think of that since they believe they are the
wisest among us and their choices are in perfect harmony with
their idea of 'right' and 'correct.'
       This is totalinarianism, of course.

I think cigarette ads were banned in broadcast in the 60's. I
remember Marlboro Man TV commercials, just barely. I know Joe
Camel in magazines was banned more recently.
I took the quote above because I really think that is the
motivation for it all -- they think they are wise and right and
those that disagree need their intervention. I remember
watching Bill Maher trying to figure out his solution to
problems, and he really believes that the wise and right (people
who think just like he does) should basically be in charge and
"Joe 6 pack" shouldn't even have the vote. I think there are a
lot who think the same way, but are loath to come out and say it
       up front.

I remember cigarette TV ads in the 60s very well. They never
bothered me or made me want to smoke but they need to be gone.
The government needs to take an active role is banning foods,
like candy, to kids, soda drinks, Doritos, potatoe chips that
make them fat. US kids are becoming mindless internet obsessed
couch potatoes today. And ban those violent video games while
you are at it. Those that promote guns.

Yeah, ban everything that makes no difference to Steve. Thats
       our new policy.

       NealC ,
If you insist on a fat population of American couch potatoes at
least take away the guns. It would make it a safer place.

       @NealC
Jerry is probably older than me. I`m 60 (a vibrant young 60) and
Jerry is probably 62 or 63.
And, you’re no Spring Chicken yourself Neil, so I wouldn’t be
bringing up age. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
