This thread can be a clearinghouse of internet articles on
China's use of information technology to spy on and control
their populace.

We don't need to go that far to see a kooky, out of control
government controlling its people. Look at what the subjects in
the state of California deal with. And to think that some people
want to adopt this form of control for all Americans. Again, so
much for socialism.

California ought to up the fine to $1000. I’d support a bill
like that 1000%.
Of course parent‘s can’t be entrusted to make important
decisions for their kids. Their goofballs most of the time.
It‘s time California started stopping kids from getting poisoned
by capitalist greed with this junk food. But, I wouldn’t look at
anything that farce (Fox) news puts out. So, who knows. Most of
it is just made up anyway. Read The Militant instead.

They are doing right thing. You know all those fat kids drink
soda and eating too much fat food. It is very unhealthy fat
people aren't going to live long. Though I probably disagree
with the fine, instead of fines they should heavily tax all
that fat food and sugar drink.

I think the point Pasha is that it is a slippery slope, more
surrender of our freedom to the government. If the government
decides you should only eat green eggs and ham it cam then set
up taxes and fines to make it happen.
It is not for the government to decide what is the good thing or
the right thing for me and my family. I dont need a nanny.
Why is everyone so willing to hand their freedom over to the
nanny state? Everything you had to them never comes back, and
only leads to the next confiscation.

People don't appreciate the influence of the major companies on
how they live their lives. You've got mass-media full of
expressed and implicit advertisements of soda, junk food and
general over-consumption as a way of life - because the whole
system is dependent on your turning into a buying-discarding
machine. So here you don't mind giving up your freedom because
no-one ever announced to you that you are just to hand it over
to those companies. But anything a goverment does will always go
under careful scrutiny, hence the outrage: do they have the
nerve to tell me what to do!
But if you made a small shift in how you perceive it: a
government as yet another powerful player that tries to
counteract the actions of other powerful players, there is a
high chance you would judge that differently.
I'm not saying making people do X is good. I'm just pointing out
how most of people fail to see that they had already handed over
their freedoms and choices (or the choice was taken away from
them, gradually and silently) a long time ago. And now those who
had taken them away from them just don't want to lose their
profits. That's it. It's not necessarily about your freedom to
get fat and sick.

I was with you until the last line.
The assumption that I am choosing to be fat and sick, or leading
my children to be fat and sick just because I would like my
sugary fizzy drink without extra nanny state taxes is
ridiculous.
Personally I am not a soda guy because of family history of
problems with sugar. But I eat other things that might be
unhealthy in the government's eyes - when does the eye of the
dragon turn towards that?
People i know cant function without coffee. In my opinion
unhealthy amounts. Since sugar and coffee and McDonalds are not
my problem then it is ok for the govt to tax them, but they
better not tax my bacon!
Aside from large cuban cigars celebrating my latest capitalistic
achievement I dont smoke, never wanted to. But i still resent
the govt taking a pack of cigarettes from $3-$5/pack to
$15-$20/pack all thru their nanny state taxes.
F*ck the government. They have a job, the rest is up to me.

Just to expand a little bit, it is not the role of the
government to use taxes and fines to change my behavior to
whatever they think it should be. They can regulate criminal
acts, the rest is my freedom.
Otherwise where do we draw the line between what is happening in
California, and what is happening in China? It all comes from
the same mindset. The tyranny of the majority, the tyranny of
the politically correct.

The essential point that gets missed in these debates is what is
called in the law "The Police Power of the State." The State has
the power of life and death over you and less drastically, the
power to arrest and detain you for the rest of your life. No
large corporation holds these powers. Some believe that man is
essentially an ignorant life form that requires absolute and
complete domination from other humans in the form of government.
I for one believe that we possess free will. That includes the
freedom to make harmful choices. For those who love government
control of their lives, I always ask what thing do you enjoy
that would outrage you if the state took it away under the guise
of protecting you from yourself?
