       Sylvester Stallone on German Art
By: Alharacas Date: August 3, 2018, 4:02 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
A newspaper article about the difficulties of restoring modern
works of art (replace rotting fruit? put whole work of art on
compost heap?) reminded me of this old but brilliant interview
with Sylvester Stallone in the Süddeutsche Zeitung:
SZ: Stimmt es, dass sich ein Bild von Anselm Kiefer in Ihrem
       Haus, nun ja: dematerialisierte?
Is it true that a picture by Anselm Kiefer kind of
       de-materialised in your home?
Stallone: Ich habe dafür 1,7 Millionen Dollar bezahlt! Es war
Stroh drauf. Kiefer hat das Stroh mit Klebstoff befestigt. Zu
Hause denke ich: Scheiße, was liegt da unterm Bild? Stroh. Jeden
1,7 Millionen Dollar!
I paid $1.7 million for it! There was straw on it. Kiefer had
glued on the straw. At home, I start thinking: shit, what's that
under the picture? Straws. Every day another one. I call the guy
from the gallery and say "The Kiefer's moulting." Says the
gallery owner "Mr. Stallone, that's normal, the picture's in the
process of development, the picture's alive." I thought I'd go
       crazy. $1.7 million!
       SZ: Und dann?
       And then?
Stallone: Ich hab' die Halme wieder drangeklebt.
I glued the straw back on.
       SZ: Nicht wahr.
       You didn't.
Stallone: Doch. Jeden Tag lag ein Halm unten, ich hin,
Klebstoff, Halm wieder dran. Ich habs' nicht eingesehen.
Yes. Every day I saw another straw on the floor, picked it up,
glued it right back on. I just didn't get it.
SZ: Eine Co-Produktion von Anselm Kiefer und Sylvester Stallone.
A co-production by Anselm Kiefer and Sylvester Stallone.
Stallone: So ungefähr. Das Bild ist aber verkauft.
More or less. The picture's been sold, though.

Idiot. He could have made a strawman and sell it for a couple of
hundred thousand dollars. You can tell he's neither an artist
       nor a business man.

Oh my God, don't show me celebrity art. I have a rare form of
Stendhal syndrome: when I see art like this I get very moved -
I'm sorry for my bad English, I mean I start to move very fast
towards the exit. And it works with reproductions, I don't need
to go to Florence, I mean Hollywood, to get the symptoms.
After I saw this yesterday I had to run for 20 hours straight
and now I'm too tired to sleep. See what you've done?
