Oh, come on - it's metaphorical. By saying that you declare,
probably among other lofty qualities, being above the pettiness
of divisions between people based on their
nationality/residence. In the era of memes, it probably doesn't
mean anything in most cases but you can't say it is stripped of
any meaning in general.
Those other lofty qualities are 'important' personal qualities
like being able to distinguish between different wines, knowing
who the hot new designer is, knowing whether your friend (
female ) is wearing the same outfit/dress a SECOND time ( HORROR
of HORRORS ), and being able to distinguish, at a quick glance,
a BMW 750iL from a plebeian 750. I could go on, but you get get
the idea.  ::)
P.S. You must also declare loudly, at indiscriminate times, that
you are totally AGAINST THE CLUBBING of BABY SEALS and that the
WHALES MUST BE SAVED!

Oh, I have no reason to doubt that. But how does this change the
meaning of the phrase itself? Say a bunch of shallow bimbos
starts citing X [paste the name of any figure you find worthy of
respect because of their ideas] - does this make their ideas
meaningless? Na-ah.

Huh? Isn't that a common phenomenon: stupid people binge-posting
smart-sounding quotes in social media? Should that affect the
quotes, their authors and the works they were taken from?

A group of shallow bimbos is not a "bunch". You buy bananas by
the "bunch".
A group of shallow bimbos is a "shopping trip".

This was a language question and really should be held off
limits to your US hatred silliness. "Citizen of the world" is
exactly what Jerry and I said it is - meaningless. By
definition a person can only be a citizen of one country - that
is what citizenship is.
Well, I`m just trying tp get the language straight here so as to
avoid confusing. I`ve heard open-minded people in the US say
they were world citizens and it`s got meaning. What do you mean
off-limits to my „US hatred silliness“?

I am sorry NealC , I looked up “bunch” in several dictionaries
and it may be used in an informal way for people.

@Scicolone - I suspect this is what NealC was joking about:

Do go and have a look - it's about one of the most endearing
(and original?) features of the English language.

I also read the English article on Wikipedia to freshen up my
knowledge this morning. Glad to find some authors I like.
