“Citizens of the World“, Hawaii_what does it mean?
By: nataliestpete Date: July 16, 2018, 1:52 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I’ve got a business card from an American couple who lives in
Hawaii.
It’s said “ Citizens of the World”though there is their address
on it.
I didn’t ask them any questions as I was afraid to be offended
somehow.
My association is that’s a community of retired people which
isn’t exactly good, right?
However, they are traveling in a luxury way and perhaps, a life
in Hawaii is supposed to be nice.
Any explanations please?
Thanks

That's a trendy thing to say to appear chic and sophisticated
these days. It's meaningless babble.

Americans use it to show they have a more International view of
life, as opposed to many Americans who have an insular, U.S.
centric view of everything.
But like Jerry said, it is pseudo sophisticated babble.

NealC and Jerry.
It is not meaningless babble. That’s terrible to say that. The
USA doesn’t own me. I’m a citizen of the world too, and I
happen to be a human being born on the planet , and that makes
me a citizen of the world, or the world family, not some piece
of property of the US government, just because I had the
misfortune to happen to have been born in this dumb country, the
USA, that thinks it owns everyone and everything in the world
and fancies itself the „best country in the world.“ What is
that? A joke? Yeah, and a pretty sick one at that. Not only is
the US NOT the best country in the world, I don’t think it even
ranks in the top 50. It’s more like in the lower 40.

So Blonde, don’t listen to NealC and Jerry about these kinds of
things. They’re just US flag waving Republicans who don’t know
any better. Listen to me. :)

This was a language question and really should be held off
limits to your US hatred silliness. "Citizen of the world" is
exactly what Jerry and I said it is - meaningless. By
definition a person can only be a citizen of one country - that
is what citizenship is.

Oh, come on - it's metaphorical. By saying that you declare,
probably among other lofty qualities, being above the pettiness
of divisions between people based on their
nationality/residence. In the era of memes, it probably doesn't
mean anything in most cases but you can't say it is stripped of
any meaning in general.

Is it a metaphor used internationally? Or is it a code used
only by pompous Americans?

Well, cosmopolitanism is older than the US. But you can be sure
that anything used by pompous Americans will be replicated
(tweeted, posted, retweeted, shared etc.) more often.
