       "What's so amazing about a cardinal in the bird feeder?&quo

       This is a famous cartoon by Charles Addams:
       "What's so amazing about a cardinal in the bird feeder?"
       [attachimg=1]
       In US English, the word "cardinal" has several quite different
       meanings. It is the name for a bright red bird that is very
       common and easy to see in backyards and suburbs. In fact I saw
       one in our yard just this morning:
       [attachimg=2]
       People put out bird feeders because they enjoy watching birds,
       and a "cardinal in the bird feeder" would normally be one of
       these red birds.
       The real base meaning of "cardinal" is "principal, most
       important." The cardinal points of the compass are north, south,
       east, and west, as contrasted with the secondary ones like
       northeast, south-southwest, etc. Thus, the highest officials in
       the Roman Catholic church are "cardinals." The Pope is elected
       by the cardinals.
       In the Addams cartoon, the "cardinal in the bird feeder" is
       actually a tiny little Catholic priest.
       Cardinals traditionally wear red robes. This is the late
       Cardinal Law, who was Cardinal of the Archdiocese of Boston.

       Thus "cardinal" is also the name of a bright shade of red--I'm
       an alumnus of a university whose school colors are cardinal and
       gray. And thus, finally, these bright red birds are called
       "cardinals."

       I was trying to comment, wrote that I didn't understand what was
       it about ( I just moved there using a link you posted on Skype)
       and then... oh, it was a puzzle. Oops.

       The cartoon is not a puzzle, it's a joke; a "pun," a play on
       words, in this case two meanings for the word "cardinal." I then
       went on to try to explain the joke.
