How long do you think this Covid 19 pandemic will last?
By: SHL Date: July 18, 2020, 8:27 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I was wondering if anyone has any idea how long this corona
virus thing will last? The EU imposed an Einreiseverbot (entry
ban) on people with US passports. Even Canada and Mexico won’t
let us in, at least until August 20th (so I read, but this could
be extended, who knows)? What worries me is I could be stuck in
this dumb country (the USA) for god-knows-how long? This could
go on for 5 years! The Japanese got lucky and are allowed in,
and the Canadians, but the US is at the top of the Corona list
as the biggest disaster zone for corona in the world (thanks to
Trump). I wonder if the Russians will let me in ?

It's not looking great, is it? Sorry you guys ended up so
isolated. Regarding how long it's going to last, my crystal ball
remains silent. A few months back, I argued about it with some
know-it-all on a certain language learning website and he
claimed that it had peaked and no way would there be more than
400 000 deaths worldwide. The deaths just exceeded 600 000.
We're almost back to normal here now but as they started
loosening the restrictions, there were more cases, as expected.
It's been bearable so far, though.
I travelled to Austria with my friends and came back with what
looked a lot like COVID so I had another one of those delightful
between-your-nose-and-your-brain swabs and luckily it was
negative so I am free to leave my bedroom now (I was worried I
might give it to my parents). How's your mother doing?

Yeah, this has been a terrible year for everyone it seems. Glad
you’re doing okay. A couple of attorneys in our local court
tested positive for Covid, but I don’t think they are in that
bad of shape. Not yet. Who knows what will happen in the future.
This thing is really out there. Some people (Trump supporters
most likely), not so much around where I live in the US, are
really being stupid about this, like refusing masks, or acting
like everything is back to normal, when it’s not. That‘s why
we’ve got the highest rates in the world, and I think 3rd
highest death rates from it.
As to my mother, at first we thought things would be okay for
her, because he CT scan looked good. No evidence of cancer. But,
she developed swollen lymph nodes in her neck a week ago or so.
An urgent care doctor she saw didn‘t know what was causing it
and gave her some antibiotics. But, the antibiotics didn’t clear
it up, although she thinks they might have helped a little.
She had a biopsy of the lymph node in her armpit last week, and
the never got the results of it. She already had an appointment
to see the same doc as a follow-up on Tuesday, but that doctor‘s
office called her today and the doctor wants to see her
tomorrow, earlier than expected. That’s not a good sign. So,
I’ll be taking her tomorrow at 12:20. So at the moment things
don’t sound that great for her. Sorry to say.

I am sorry SHL that things are so bad with this virus and that
you are afraid to get trapped. How long it will last is hard to
say, but there are promising news about different vaccine ready
for next year.
People really do not travel very far, even in Europe, mostly
they go to visit friends or family in their own or neighboring
countries, mostly by private car or train (mask is compulsory).
I do not know how it is in German airports, but where I live
there are little controls. Theoretically, you should self
confine during 10 days at your arrival, if you come from a “RED”
country. But it seems that it is all based on personal
responsibility.
If you want to come to Europe maybe you should try to stay a
week in Iceland...did you check that option?
P.S. sorry for your Mom, let’s hope it will be ok.

Thanks, Nobody, about the kind words about mom. My sisters and I
are worried about her.
Iceland is closed to us too (it’s a Schengen area country like
Switzerland). Yeah, there’s no where to go really (like I said,
except maybe Russia, which is about as bad with Covid as the
US). I’ve never experienced anything like this. But, that’s
true for a lot of the world. I guess all we can do is hope
things get better. And soon.
Nice hearing from you.
Take care
Steven

Steven, theoretisch kannst Du nach Deutschland fahren wenn du
einen Test gemacht hast (spätestens 48 Stunden vor dem
Eintritt). So musst Du Dich nicht 14 Taagen lang isolieren.
HTML https://www.rki.de/DE/Content/InfAZ/N/Neuartiges_Coronavirus/Tests.html
Aber die Situation kann sich plötzlich ändern. Ich würde kein
Flugticket buchen, das Geld bekommst Du kaum zurück.
Warte bis auf nächstes Jahr. Es wird schon gehen und deine
Mutter braucht dich jetzt.

It might last forever like AIDS. Antibodies last only few
months so if vaccine developed you are going to need multiple
shots to stay protected. But things aren't that terrible. It
looks like some East Asian countries got it under control even
without lockdowns. As long as government takes virus seriously
and not acting macho it can be taken under control.
