COVID-19 Testing
By: Nikola Date: April 23, 2020, 1:51 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
My workplace has sorted out COVID-19 testing for those who are
returning to work next week so I had it done today and it was
surprisingly unpleasant. Has anyone done it? They go so far up
your nose it feels like they're trying to poke your brains out.
I spoke to my doctor friend. She laughed and said: "According to
a renowned German virologist, a successfully collected sample is
one that leaves the the person cursing for ten minutes after the
procedure."

Congratulations Nikola! You were brave. Looks like they wanted
to clean your sinuses at the same time.
I am happy that I only work online nowadays. So no need to
undergo this procedure.

Bad luck. Those who tested positive and just had a deep cough
and some fever now are immune for a while. I envy them. At least
they do not have to worry anymore.

Nikola, that doesn’t sound very pleasant, but I’m glad you’re
okay. I think things are starting to loosen up a bit now. I’m
getting work again after a month of nothing. I still want to do
the italki community tutoring thing. It’s probably fun and a
great way to meet people the world over.
In the States everyone is generally still on the doom and gloom
side, but I see signs that people aren’t putting up with this
lockdown nonsense much longer. You can’t expect a population to
live like that for too long. Particularly when the odds of
getting infected are about 1%, if that. I just read they
anticipate the US unemployment rate to be 12% by the end of the
year. That’s pretty high. In the a 1930s Depression it was 25%.

I hope you get to do it, even just for the fact that you would
get to speak German on a regular basis. And you have revealed
your face now :)

Thanks for the encouragement Nikola. I do want to do it, but I
don’t want to have to go out and spend $200 or more on a
professional microphone or even more for special sound
equipment. Can I just use my iPhone for the video and upload it
to italki? My Skype works fine on my laptop for conversation.
So, I’m not so sure what else I really need. Plus, italki says
there are no positions available anymore for German, but I
should just apply anyway and at least be on the wait list.
Things change all the time.
su.ki. (I forgot her new name) sent me a message on italki
saying she liked the new pic and that I looked pretty good for
62 (well, I’ll be 62 in a month, but close enough). That was
nice of her. As they say, flattery will get you everywhere. :)
Gosh, it makes me think of that old Beetles song from the 60s,
„When I’m 64.“ You know some of the lyrics, „Tending the garden,
picking the weeds, who could ask for more? Will you still need
me, will you still feed me, when I’m 64?“ Search YouTube if you
don’t know the song. Geez. Now that songs makes me feel like I’m
getting up there in age. I used to hear it as a little kid and
always thought, „Wow, 64 is really old.“ LOL.

I haven't had a PCR test, but the image that Nikola showed us
reminds me of an influenza test. :D I think it looks the same.
I had the influenza tests a few times before. When I had it, I
had a high fever and couldn't see what my doctor was doing to
me. You know, if you have a high fever, you are too sick to feel
uncomfortable about the test. Being sick is the worst and having
the test is the second. It is not as bad as the sickness.
Honestly, I've been wondering why so many people have to get PCR
tests. Is that to collect info and data of COVID and to make
drugs? I heard the PCR tests sometimes not accurate. It shows
positive on even just a cold. Really?
So much information about COVID out there. It is hard what to
believe.
How much percentage of positive means the country have immunity,
antibody as a nation? Does 60% positive mean that the country
has immunity and safe? Or 80%? I'm wondering.
Some countries start antibody tests. I hope it'll work well. PCR
tests are for people who have symptoms, so I'd like to have the
antibody test, not PCR test.
