       Further thoughts on the quarantine

       I ran into an expression in English, someplace, a while ago that
       few people use (I could be the only one) „sometimes good things
       happen for the wrong reasons.“ I’m not sure if this expression
       or something like it exists in other languages, but I always
       thought it was interesting.
       The current Corona pandemic got me thinking of when the HIV/AIDS
       epidemic hit in the US in 1981. Western Europe was about 2 years
       behind the US with infections, but it eventually made its way to
       the UK, France and to then West Germany. When West Germany had
       about 1000 cases of it, East Germany had one. So, they used to
       call the Iron Curtain in the 80s also „The Iron Condom.“ Well,
       it was quite true. Yes, it wasn’t right that those in the East
       couldn’t freely travel to the West, but that quasi-Isolation did
       bring with it some protection, some unintended good?  Obviously,
       none of this applies to Corona. But, that got me remembering
       that quote. Something good happened (many people not getting
       infected) even if it was for the wrong reason (The Iron
       Curtain.“
       Are there similar expressions in other languages? It’s pretty
       rare in English as it is. Just curious.

       The only expression that comes to my mind is the following: in
       Italian we say  “tutto il male non viene per nuocere” that means
       that sometimes bad things happen but they can open the path to
       positive events.
       It’s not exactly the same. An American friend who lives since
       ages in Europe told us at the very beginning of the pandemic “If
       only this virus could bring the end of the Trump era”. Well, I
       think that unfortunately will not happen.
