       Bad Habits in Quarantine
By: Allie Date: April 13, 2020, 3:50 am

(So, it's been a while and I am rusty, but I am giving posting
       something a try)
I've seen lots of inspirational content about things you can do
to become a better version of yourself during quarantine, from
       studying languages, to getting abs.
       But what about bad habits?
Have you developed any during these last weeks? Are you
       developing any?

I have to say that for various reasons, I haven't been the best
version of myself, to put it mildly. I don't think I have
developed any new bad habits but those I already have are having
       a blast.

Hahaha, I usually wake up early, but with every day looking like
Saturday, I've been sleeping later than usual... but still
waking up at the same time.
Weird circumstances made me start associating with people who
smoke, drink, do hard drugs, tattoo themselves and friends in
secret parties in sketchy places and listen to Justin Bieber.
I am not sure it's a bad thing, though... yet.

Procrastinating is my biggest default. So I continue to do it
even more, since I have the feeling that time might be endless.
Actually I have less time than before. So I procrastinate all
       the paperwork without feeling guilty.
I also started watching TV, the news every evening. It’s another
way to connect with others and feel to be part of a global
thing. In normal time, I consider TV a waste of time.

I walked for about 10 minutes yesterday. I think I might have
       pulled a muscle.

I know what you ladies are talking about (there was a time when
I would have said „guys“ as the plural of men and women but
       English doesn‘t have a you-plural (except „ya‘ll“ and I’m sure
not going say that. There’s no way I want to sound like I’m
coming out of Mississippi or Alabama)). I could have gotten
away with saying „guys“ in the 1970s, but that’s out now.
Yeah. I feel like this self isolation is horrible- social
distancing, no business, but the bills keep coming in. Even the
banks have shortened their hours and are only letting in 2
people at a time so lines go around the block. It better let up
soon with kids going back to school, and university and their
usual jobs, and travel, or we‘re heading for a really strange
       economy and political situation.
You can’t even get a haircut. I was lucky and found one barber
in my whole County who said he was open and legal, and right
around the corner from my office, so I went in and got a great
haircut. I saw him getting into a verbal argument across the
street from the bank I was waiting at outside to get into. This
black guy had parked in his driveway and the barber politely
asked him to move his car. The black guy called him a right wing
extremist racist and said he could kick his a@@. Later I asked
the barber what that was all about. He said some punk tried to
fight him and call him a white racist. He said „The guy didn’t
know a thing about me. I’ve been in the Marines and my hands are
deadly weapons. That’s just how I was trained. And the calling
me a white , he doesn‘t even know my wife is black.“
They are a lot of crazy people in the world.
Yeah, I’m sort of thinking like I’m on emergency

We have to wait another month before hairdressers start opening
again. I am not a natural blonde and let me tell you, after
being stuck at home for this long, I ain't fooling no one :D

This social distancing, closure of businesses are getting
ridiculous. It’s killing my business. It’s putting people out
off work (not everyone works in healthcare, or can work over the
internet). I have to look for alternative ways of making a
living because I’m going out of business. I think I earned $700
       this month- half minimum wage.
The lady at the German bakery, which has practically closed and
laid everyone off, said „At least you have a mother to live
with. Some people are living out of their cars.“ Well, that is
true, I have a roof over my head, food and a bed to sleep in,
but that’s about it. This is like the US Great Depression of
the 1930s, or we‘re headed for that, or 1920s era Weimarer
Republik Germany. One lady on the news was part of a protest
movement over these stupid „harbor and shelter at home“ orders
or whatever they call it. She said, „We can’t work, we don’t
have any money, we might as well get infected with this stupid
       virus and die.“
Seems like the only people who aren’t being impacted by this are
the already retired or the super-rich. The future looks bleak.

Well, worrying about one's existence is a completely new concept
to many people in the western world (many, of course not all)
and it's a toll for taking a good standard of living for
granted. We all have to suck it up. It's good to stay connected
and see what's happening in other countries and what different
approaches result in. I don't think there was one single perfect
solution that wouldn't have cost lives or money. The governments
are just trying to choose the lesser evil while being terribly
misinformed by China and sadly even the WHO. I wonder if better
decisions would have been made if there had been no information
at all, who knows. If your country loses too much money, you're
losing lives. If your country loses too many lives and has to
take care for too many seriously ill, it loses money too.
Countries with a decent healthcare system can give "powering
through" a try and maybe succeed but for a country that isn't
prepared to deal with so many sick people, this could be even
worse. I understand the frustration of people who demonstrate
against their government's strategy but it feels a bit like they
want "things to be fine again" and that's currently not an
       option.
Anyway, it won't last forever. And I believe these things make
people stronger in the long run.

Nikola, well I appreciate the encouraging words that this crisis
won’t last forever, but at what cost? There are already people
in the States living out of their cars with no income saying
they’d rather risk getting the virus and dying than go on living
like this. I’m going out of business, living free with my
92-year old mom for free just to have a roof over my head, food
and a bed to sleep in. God, how pathetic. About the only place I
can imagine getting a job would be at a supermarket or pharmacy
and make what? $2000/month? Or I could take early social
security retirement next month when I turn 62. But I’ll have to
pay $865 / month of it to maintain heath insurance (and my
social security will only be about $1850/month anyway, and I’ll
have to wait another 3 years for Medicare, the National Health
Service for those over 65 to take over for healthcare costs
entirely, which you need the most over 50). I can still work
while collecting early social security, but I never expected to
be in a situation like this. Italki teaching positions have all
filled up with people around the world trying to find ways of
earning a living from behind a computer at home. This is the
worst economic Desaster since the depression of the 1930s.
       Things are looking bleak.
