Do you wear masks in your country?

I was surprised to know that in the Czech Republic people
adopted home-made masks to protect themselves and other against
the current virus.
In my culture it was something that only Japanese tourists did.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, we were told to leave the
masks to the people who really need it and nobody talked about
home made masks. So this video surprised me. I think it is
great:

I'm glad you posted this because I don't want to be going round
saying "hey, we're doing the right thing, learn from us". I
think everyone was skeptical at first but they started raising
the awareness very early and debunking the myth that a mask is
meant to protect you, which it doesn't do very well and
therefore is useless. As they say in the video, it's there to
protect others. I have been very frustrated with the WHO because
they kept saying that you shouldn't wear a mask unless you're
sick. There is enough information out there for people to know
that the disease is already spreading way before one realises
they have it.
This is a very simple video explaining how COVID-19 works and
spreads:

Things to keep in mind:
A mask that is used for too long without washing can be worse
than none. Only respirator masks protect you, regular face masks
only protect others but that also means you don't have to
purchase any special equipment. People should be discouraged
from using masks that were made for healthcare professionals,
especially if there's a shortage in the country. People should
be aware that all such measures increase risk-taking among the
population. This happened when safety belts and other protective
tools were introduced as compulsory: fatalities would increase
because people felt more protected and started acting
carelessly. This needs to be talked about, in my opinion.
I believe that the WHO has finally changed their statement about
face masks.

I've heard WHO is changing their mind. I've just returned from
shopping. I was in one of big supermarkets. They care about
people queuing with 2m gaps, disinfecting carts, forcing
customers to use gloves and disinfectants.
50% of customers were using masks (various types of masks,
whatever was available). The staff dealing with customers were
using masks and gloves, but the staff putting goods on shelves
were walking among customers unprotected.
Since there is a shortage of masks and other PPE the healthcare
staff e.g. in general hospitals (without infectious diseases
wards) is asked to use special masks only when dealing with
confirmed cases or with strong suspicion of covid-19. What
actually means that they use simple surgical masks (or no mask
at all) when meeting most patients. My friend's husband is a
doctor working on cardiology ward - he gets one surgical mask
to use for the whole shift... so he buys masks for himself and
takes them to his work.
What I heard on the radio yesterday is that up to 20% of people
with the confirmed infection are healthcare professionals.
On the other hand it happened that a nurse wrote on Facebook
that she has not enough protection equipment in her hospital -
and the management fired her...

Don’t forget that many people who have the disease and spread it
are symptomless.

This is the main problem that a person without symptoms can
infect others.
Nobody is surprised nowadays seeing a person wearing the mask on
the street in a shop or other public place. But about 2 weeks
ago the people's reactions were strange. The officials used to
say then "Wear a mask only when you have symptoms of an
infection". And there were even acts of verbal aggression
against people wearing masks "When you are infected - stay
home and not go outside infecting the others". I've heard about
customers shouting at the cashier wearing a mask at supermarket.

We just got a call last night from our Department of Emergency
Services saying that the stay-at-home orders were still in
place, I think at least until the end of the month (only to
leave the house to shop for food, go to the pharmacy, or go to
doctors appointments), but that they were also now advising, but
not ordering, anyone leaving the house to wear a face mask. I’m
not wearing a face mask, even though my brother-in-law bought
1000 of them, since if they are not the hospital ones, I doubt
their effectiveness. I don’t see how those little dust masks can
be of any use. But, I do see people wearing masks, and it’s left
me wondering if they are infected, but symptomless, or just
trying to protect themselves. It does send mixed signals. I even
saw a woman at the court house yesterday with not just a face
mask, but one of those plastic face shields too. It made me
wonder if she were infected or just trying not to be infected
herself.

Steven, the comments above and the video on top explain this.
Masks don't protect people who wear them. They protect everyone
else.

I protect you, you protect me (to a certain extent).
What interests me is WHY AND HOW THE CZECH REPUBLIC was able to
introduce this common sense procedure and other western
countries seem allergic to it. In which aspect are you
different?
I understand that Asian countries were confronted with previous
epidemics but -as far as I know- you weren’t.

Many people have been wondering about that, even here. I think
it's a combination of things. The government ordered it so we
started doing it. I guess we're quite obedient. Also, it was
explained to people. Celebrities spoke on TV and social media
about it. All TV presenters started wearing masks, even in the
studio. As to why the government made that decision, I think
that required a certain level of disobedience because, as I
said, the WHO had been recommending the exact opposite and we
went against it. I don't blame countries who listened to them.
