The "no-virus" will come one day...
We all have to reduce our movements, even if it's not obligatory
in our countries (yet).
Every person with a common infectious disorder can create a big
mess and paralyze the local health services for hours, when
appeares in a wrong time and place.

Thanks. I know what you mean. My wife works only on the phone
and in front of the computer since the beginning of the previous
week. She says that the people want to talk more than ever.
Thanks to last changes of regulations in Healthcare sector in my
country a lot of administrative work can be done online and no
physical contact is necessary. All documents usually reach the
appropriate institutions via internet. Many people are against
this system because it's far from perfection - fails in up to 5%
I think. But in this epidemiological situation it helps a lot.
I'm in a less comfortable situation. Theoretically about 90% of
my duties can be done on the computer only. I even bought the
appropriate computer to take some work home (there is too much
of it to finish it during the normal hours). Since a few weeks
the amount of work is much lower and it would be economically
rational to allow a part of the staff to work online (those
people could easily replace the others in case of quarantine).
But such a decision of management would be considered
inappropriate by those who have no such possibilities. So I
normally go to work. I was even obliged to stay at work in a
short term quarantine while we were waiting for the test results
of a person who was suspected of being infected, and who could
theoretically have contact with us. After a 24h or so (half of
this time I was allowed to be at home) the person was confirmed
negative and we were released.
I like this video of an Italian with the busy schedule. I was
closed home alone for less than one day and this time had gone
quickly. I was in contact with my co-workers interested in what
actually happened during my shift, with my boss who was
monitoring the situation. I informed only a few friends and
family, commented something in social media and made a few
WhatsApp chats with my Spanish friends, because I was curious
what were they doing in the quarantine time. And the day was
gone.
The problem I see is that each government has its own views on
what's going on and tries to create its own procedures based on
different concepts. By the way some of them have their own
business or political goals which they want to preserve, even if
it stays in a conflict with fighting the epidemy.
...but it's not time to criticize anyone. We must believe
everyone does everything that can be done in this moment.

Well, Martin, that doesn't sound great. I think you're right
that it would make more sense to have at least some people work
from home so that they could come into work when others get ill,
especially in an important sector like healthcare. What are the
10% of duties you can't carry out from home?
Soon after our school closed for pupils, they gave us the choice
to work from home, once they knew that the distance learning was
up and running and everyone was confident teaching through video
calls. We can still come in but they don't want us to take
public transport, which would be the only way for me. To be
honest, for me, there'd be no added value in coming in. I'm glad
I can teach from home. My other students are quite flexible,
most of them are OK with Skype and with those who live locally,
we sit in the garden and keep a reasonable distance.

Space to rant. Thank you.
Some figures:
15 days after their first casualty, China had had 35 deaths and
been in lockdown for 2 days. By day 30, over 3000 were dead.
15 days after their first casualty, Italy had had 56 deaths and
went into lockdown the next day. By day 30, over 4000 were dead.
Here in Britain, 15 days after the first casualty we'd had 233
deaths. Do the maths!!
Did we take lessons from China and Italy and go into lockdown?
No. By day 15 Britain was still hanging out in pubs. The
weather turned sunny this weekend. What did people do to
prepare for the horror which is inevitably going to come? They
stripped the supermarkets bare, stockpiled pasta and toilet
rolls, and headed for seaside resorts and the parks in their
millions.
Idiots.
We're a nation of selfish idiots led by selfish idiots.

Well said, SuKi. I think that agreeing with you wholeheartedly
would be a bit rude but at the same time I can't really argue
with what you said. I've been watching Britain's powering
through it with increasing concern.
