What is the scariest disease or medical condition you've ever
heard of and why?

Gosh, just get a Merck Manual in US and take your pick. The list
is endless. As far infectious diseases? Contrary to what you
think, there only 2 infectious diseases that are 100% fatal if
not treated: HIV and rabies. Rabies of all things. That seems
weird but it’s true.
Every time I go to the hospital at Kaiser, my provider, they ask
„Have you taken any trips recently to the Democratic Republic of
the Congo? I’m like what? Ah no, and I’ve not got that place on
the travel itinerary any time soon. Geez. A little hop down to
Kinshasa sounds like fun. I don’t think so. Neal, Nikola? Any
takers?
Of course, they are thinking about Ebola.

I looked up hotels in Kinshasa. They're not even that cheap.
Anyway, can't wait to see what holiday suggestions are going to
be thrown my way after this search.

Nikola,
I‘m sure they have 5-star hotels in Kinshash but, that’s a place
not on my travel list. :)
After all they don’t even speak German there! :D

As a child, the first disease I heard of was tuberculosis. I
wasn’t that scared since the disease seemed to belong to the
past. Recently I read an old Italian classic novel where they
describe the plague that killed in the seventeenth century a
huge portion of the population of Milano.
It is interesting to compare with the actual coronavirus
epidemic, there are some similarities:
* retention of information by the authorities
* spreading of fake news
* analogous sanitary mesures like confinement
* no real cure for it.
