Neal, I heard it too. It was on the same website I provided a
link to above:
HTML https://www.worldstandards.eu/why-no-universal-plug/
"The reason why the world is now stuck with no less than 15
different styles of plugs and wall outlets, is because many
countries preferred to develop a plug of their own, instead of
adopting the US standard. In one sense those countries were
actually right, though: the wobbly American plugs and their
uninsulated prongs are almost prehistoric in terms of design and
they are notoriously unsafe."
Is this not true, then? It does come from a "mean" .eu source ;)

Nikola,
Well. If it’s on the internet it’s gotta be true, right? :)
Seriously though, the US plugs are the goofiest things you’ve
ever seen. They use to be too small prongs, now they are 3 for
safety (the third being some kind of ground). But they are
wobbly and weird. And the prongs are so little and short they
fall out of their Steckdosen (why am I drawing blank on the
English word for that?). I’ve had to purposely stretch them by
hand, or spread them apart so they stay put.
I never have any problems with the superior German plugs. (Neal
will say how predictable of SHL to say that undoubtedly). ;)

The old two prongs might not have been as safe, but the newer
three prong are earthed and unidirectional. We have had that as
standard for at least 30 years.

Phew.
Apparently, 120 volts could still kill you, under certain
circumstances. I find it rather unfortunate considering that it
struggles to boil a kettle.

I don’t think those goofy American plugs (they’re used in
central and parts of South America too) have trouble boiling
water. But they are wobbly and unsafe and the plugs fall out of
their holes constantly. My recharger for my iPhone /iPad is
always falling out. But, now that I think about it, my mom‘s
house was built in 1967 back when they only had the dangerous 2
prong set up. I have to check it out when I get home. All newer
places have the 3 prongs like Neal mentioned which are safer.
When my old mom passes on and the house is sold, I think we are
going to have to have all the plugs converted to the 3 prong
type to be up to building codes to be allowed to sell the house.
Back in the 60s life was different: not so safety conscience. No
one wore seatbelts in cars, kids never wore helmets on bikes (I
never did...we would have laughed at the idea). Who can get hurt
falling off a bicycle? No motorcycle helmets either and drunk
driving was a 400$ fine and no loss of your driving license.
