I wonder how things are going in Neal’s greenhouse
By: SHL Date: December 9, 2019, 10:43 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hi everybody,
Of course I wanted to get Neal’s attention, but I do wonder how
his business holds up in those cold New York winters...
Well, I’m almost 2 weeks out from my gallbladder surgery (I’m
sure everyone is on the edge of their seats waiting to hear
about my former gallbladder ;D,, May it Rest In Peace. ) I
think I wore the poor thing out after 61 years somehow. I just
got the pathology report today and all was normal, which was a
relief. I mean the tissue was histopathologically normal, which
is all that really matters, even though the poor thing suffered
chronic inflammation due to gallstones. I had more than 10
gallstones between 0.5 and 1.0 cm in dimensions, according to
the pathology report. I think the thing had no life left in it.
And, I frankly think the pathologist stopped counting at 10
gallstones and just thought, “this guy sure had a bag of rocks
       in him”....
So, I was carrying around this bag of rocks in my belly for
god-knows how long. Good riddance to that gallbladder I say.
But I was such a zombie after the surgery I couldn’t really work
or do much of anything the day after the surgery. Or even think
straight (I could have almost become a Republican under all
those meds).... I was on morphine, fentanyl right after the
surgery and then they gave me me opiates to take home. Boy,
recovery is slower than you would think, but at almost the two
week mark, I’m doing pretty well.
And, my fatty liver went away, which is amazing. Now I can have
a beer once and a while, but I’m not going back to the way I
used to drink in my 20s (my goodness). I’m just drinking at my
sister’s yearly Christmas party and some beer when I go to
Germany next year. (Can’t resist that).
Hope everyone is doing well. It’s been awhile, but I hope we can
get some lively discussions going again 8).

According to my research, a gallbladder weighs between 50 and 70
grams (and that's without stones). So congratulations, you've
       lost weight!

I was wondering about that too, Nikola, if I would lose a few
pounds once the gallbladder with all those stones were gone. I
don’t notice any difference frankly, as far as the weight goes.
I’m glad to be rid of the gallstones. The pain they can cause is
the worst gut pain there is. Women say the pain is like having a
       baby with no anesthesia.

Isn't fentanyl illegal? It is like heroin just hundred times
more powerful and a lot of people got overdosed and died.

       Hi Pasha,
       9
Fentanyl is perfectly legal in the US but is tightly controlled.
Yes, it is many times more potent than morphine, probably even
more powerful than heroin, and is probably considered the most
powerful pain medicine there is. Doctors can prescribe it to
patients not only in hospitals, but also for use at home, and in
that form is often given in the form of a transdermal patch that
one wears all day (it sort of looks like a big bandaid). I
imagine it is for safety reasons. A pill or injectable form
used in hospitals, would be rather easy to overdose on. Fentanyl
overdose is what killed entertainer Prince several years ago.
I was given hydrocodone pills to take home after my surgery,
which itself is a powerful opiate. They definitely help, but
they only give you about a 10 day supply with no refill. So, it
would be fairly hard to get a doctor after surgery to give you
another bottle of them. I know that surgeon who prescribed those
pills to me wouldn’t likely give me any more without a really
good reason. If I just said to him, “oh they just make me feel
good, so I’d like some more” he’d for sure say NO :( :(

Thanks Neal. I’m glad to be rid of that gallbladder, but the
surgery is no walk in the park, like they’ll tell you. And not
having a gallbladder takes some getting used to. It’s been 3
weeks now and I still don’t feel 100% back to normal yet.

Glad you finally checked in Neal. :)
At 6 weeks I’m finally getting over that gallbladder removal
surgery and getting those 10+ gallstones out of me. What an
ordeal that was, but a relief too.
       Hope your business prospers

       Good Morning.
This is Didi, Neal's wife. Things in the greenhouse have been
really, really busy. May and June are our busiest months. It
is why Neal would either disappear from the Boards or reply at
       odd hours and times.
To give you an idea, we have over 1,000,000 plants every year in
the greenhouses and by now 3/4 of what we had in the greenhouse
in April has been sold. Because of the virus, everyone decided
to garden this year. Daniel and I have spent so much time
identifying issues and problems for our customers. We have
become designers and advisors. Everyone thinks that gardening
is easy...some parts are. Most parts...not so much.
We are now moving into summer. Neal would work in the
greenhouse in the mornings and in the afternoons, he would
escape the heat in the houses by jumping in the pool. He would
then come back over and close the place up for the night. And
then he would join my on my night photography jaunts through
       Long Island.
