       Oh, When the Saints...

Do you have any saints/patron saints in your country? Ones with
an interesting story, message or a particularly gruesome death?
It's Saint Martin's Day here tomorrow. He is usually depicted on
a white horse, which, according to weather lore, represents
snow. So when we say that saint Martin arrived on a white horse,
it means it might start snowing anytime. It might, actually,
it's been really cold here. Other things associated with St
Martin are "svatomartinské víno" (St Martin's wine), the first
wine of the year, and "svatomartinská husa" (roast goose). The
reason people eat goose is that Martin, apparently, was so
reluctant to become bishop that he hid in a barn full of geese
but they made so much noise they gave him away.
Our number one saint is St Wenceslas, though. I had no idea
until recently that there was an English song about him. His own
brother had him killed. According to a legend he is sleeping in
the depths of the Blaník mountain along with an army of knights,
waiting to be called when the Czech nation is going through the
       worst.
