A new way of teaching Spanish in the US

Like most of the U.S. we have a growing Spanish speaking
community. Some school districts are creating bilingual
schools, not just to serve the Spanish speakers, but also to
       educate the English speakers.
Your child goes to school as normal, but one day is taught in
English, and the next in Spanish! There are special bilingual
textbooks, and the teachers learn with the kids! This isn't
only done in districts with a high percentage of Spanish
speakers, the idea is to make the entire grammar school (ages
       5-12) system on this model!
We don't have it in our school district yet but the district
where my son's wife teaches has it, so they can have their
daughter attend there. I think this is a great idea, eventually
the entire country bilingual, but I am sure this will not go
       over well in some places.
Now all they have to do is fix English spelling, and as they
have already killed cursive my educational goals would be
       complete!

In Japan, the children will start English from 9 years old at
public elementary schools next year. Many schools have already
started it though, the English education system is much behind
from other foreign countries. But many people say that it's
important to learn correct Japanese kanji (characters) first
       than Alphabets.
One of my internet friends, living in Philadelphia, sent me
presents. There was a piece of the flyer of a dentist, clinic,
accidentally in the package. It is written in English on one
side and in Spanish on the other side. I was surprised. Two
languages are written! It never happens other than on the
traveling maps for foreign tourists in Japan.

Chizuko, this is more than having a class in another language --
it is every other day being fully immersed in every subject in
the other language! Back and forth, back and forth, English to
       Spanish.

       Neal
Your comment reminds me of my daughter's studying at a high
       school in Australia.
When she was 16, she went and studied in Adelaide for a year.
One day she called me and said,
"Mom, how difficult! I didn't expect I had to study all subjects
       in English!"
She said, "I have to look up every word of all subjects,
science, geography, math....it's hard! It takes more than three
       hours every night!"
Looking back then, she says they were the most studying days in
       her life.

In Poland there are possibilities to find a bilingual class in a
high school, even some public schools have it. My son attended
such a class for 3 years. They had an increased number of
English hours, and a few subjects done partially in English. I
think it depends on the capabilities of teachers the school
employs. I remember it was a strong competition before he could
get to this type of class.

That seems great! That’s truly bilingual to learn how to express
oneself on different topics. Where I live (in Heaven) good
students spend a year during senior high school in another part
of the country to learn another language. The Old Continent has
also a university program called Erasmus, students may get a
scholarship to spend one full academic year abroad. Usually the
credits they earned abroad are recognized by their Alma Mater,
       but not always.

Language brings us together, the idea of my granddaughter being
truly bilingual, I think it is a wonderful thing.
Too bad it isn't Italian :-(
