Cyber bullying: a small foretaste of it
By: Aliph Date: August 19, 2019, 2:35 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday I read about the story of a young girl that committed
suicide after she was bullied on some social media. Her parents
are now trying to raise the awareness among people about this
problem.
Yesterday I had the impression that I felt a tiny little bit
what it does mean to be bullied on a social media. In real life
it rarely happens to me or probably I know how to handle. I
rarely feel attacked in an unjust way.
But yesterday, I wrote a comment after SuKi had posted about a
friend’s son who was arrested in California. That story reminded
me of what happened to close friends in the same US state. SHL
said that it was impossible and the Ape Known as the Former
Artist wrote that those people were telling lies. I tried to
argue and Jerry in a nasty way attacked me for the second time
in less than two months.
I could have done as I usually do when something bothers me on
this forum: try to make a diversion, start a thread about a
language problem. Ha, ha there is one about jealousy and envy...
What a coincidence.
But not this time. I felt bullied in a way and offended since
Jerry made general comments about what I write, the people I
frequent, my supposed privileged life etc.
In a way he helped me to understand how a young person who
doesn’t have a certain life experience could feel after being
bullied in front of everybody.
If you missed the episode, here is the link.

Sofia, I think the problem is that in the past, there were at
least two occasions that could be interpreted as bullying (and
far more serious than what happened to you: verbal abuse and
abuse of power) where you openly expressed support to the
aggressor, preached forgiveness and argued that anyone can have
a bad day. Did your views change now that you feel you're the
one being targeted or do you still feel that forgiveness is the
way to go? If you've changed your mind and want this issue
addressed, let us know what you'd like us to do and we can talk
about it. I've been consistently against bullying and I've made
it very clear on a number of occasions that everyone's feelings
should be taken into consideration and no one should suffer in
silence.

Sounds like cyber-bullying to me.

I think we would do well with a working definition of
cyberbullying. What is it exactly and how do we avoid it?
I don’t think one has to believe every story told and to
question it is cyberbullying.
I had a client in last week who has a 2-year old son with a
woman he never married. They live about 6 hours away from each
other, and share 50-50 custody of the boy, on a week-on-week-off
basis. There’s a possibility the mother is taking crystal
methamphetamine because her behavior is so bizarre.
Last week, while the child was with her, she text messaged my
client a one-line message, repeated 196 times in one day: it was
“F*ck you.” My client printed it out from his phone and this one
message went on for 7 pages. Then the message switched to “I
hate you, I hate you, I hate you........” That was sent 118
times in one day.
Then there were facebook posts with similar content.
THAT is cyberbullying. When I saw these messages I thought “This
woman is completely out of her mind” and I filed the paperwork
to get a retraining order/no contact order for my client, which
the Judge granted. I told him just to attach a few pages of
these messages and explain the numbers of times he was getting
this each day. Every once in a while, he would intervene and try
to say “Briley, calm down.” But those words fell on deaf ears.
That’s cyberbullying and retraining order stuff. Not simply
saying “I don’t or can’t believe the story without more facts.”
That’s just a reasonable inquiry.

Sorry Sofia, I can't do this. Only Neal can do it. He should be
back soon. You've been offered support, that's all I can do
within the ethos of this forum. If you believe italki did more
to support you, that makes it a better site indeed. Most things
aren't black and white and the same goes for EGP. I'd like to
think that you'll also remember the good times when you think of
us one day.
