Maybe I'm misinterpreting what you mean by the word normal,
       Nikola.

The usual, common thing, something that happens regularly as
opposed to a one-off which is what I think this was.

The way the comments were posed, it sounded like this was a risk
tourists in rental cars in the US take. That’s simply not true.
Like Jerry said, if you put someone in jail even for one night,
or part of the day, for traffic infractions (non-criminal
offenses) there wouldn’t be any room in the jails for real
offenders, like the crack dealers or whoever theses people
       supposedly were locked up with.
This is how urban legends get started. One people says something
to one person, who tells it to another, who repeats it to
another and now it‘s a completely different story than how it
started out. So again, until I hear more facts, I‘m not going to
       believe it happened.

This discussion is of the sort that we used to have on EGP until
everyone split. The good old days...

@ SHL you just loosed a potential client. I was going to suggest
to those friends to hire you in order to look up if the driver
was still on some kind of registry for criminals.
He wasn’t only accused to speed but also accused not to have a
valuable American/Californian driving licence though he was a
European tourist on vacation with his family in a rented car.
BTW the kids were traumatized seeing their father arrested and
       with handcuffs.
@ Jerry, my friends usually do not lie. Maybe yours do? I only
associate with respectable people, though I think one should be
careful not to exceed speed limits.

       Cute.
We don't need a reminder about your blessed life. You've written
extensively about your frequent dinner parties "the pressure is
really high" and your friends who are "professional young
couples." And who could forget your near constant bragging about
your frequent international vacations "there I was, strolling
down a lovely side street in Paris." Very low class things to
       say.
And to be clear, you lied by omission. You stated that he was
taken to jail for speeding. You mentioned nothing about driving
without an international license. What would your 'respectable'
friends say if they knew you're a liar?

How charming Jerry. You can go on here. Soon you will be all by
       yourself on this board.
       Who will applaud you?
Good bye folks. I have the adress of those I would like to meet
in real life. Jerry is not on the list.

And what made you think I'd like to be on your little list?
Pathetic. You're very petty for such a self-described upper
class woman. Go on now and enjoy your charmed life with your
       glittering society friends.
You calling me charming is the pot calling the kettle black.
If you weren't a fake you'd not hide your identity. Adios.

Well Sofia, you never said what the charge was. He would need an
international drivers license if his original license is not in
the native language along with English. An international license
       only adds the translation.
So, that might have been a problem proving he was licensed, a
minor one, that’s easily fixed. It’s the only thing I can
imagine. But, if the case was thrown out the next day
(dismissed) there is no criminal record. And it would have been
thrown out anyway by just providing the local license was
legitimate. That’s easy. No. Guaranteed there is no criminal
       record.

Of course he had an international driving licence but the
sheriff when he stopped the car and asked the whole family to go
out and put his hands against a wall (like in the films) said
that he should have a Californian driving licence. There was no
official charge. The husband was handcuffed und put in the
sheriff’s car. He asked the wife if she knew how to drive,
didn’t gave her any adress and just drove away. She had to calm
herself and the kids and speed behind the sheriff’s car in order
not to loose sight of him.
When they arrived in the jail/police station around 4 pm, she
hadn’t the sufficient cash to bail out her husband and her
credit card didn’t function at the ATM for such a big amount so
she had to call a bailsmen and it took all night.
You might belief this or not. I regret to a certain extent I
even talked about this story being accused to have friends who
lie by Jerry. But now, after I slept over it, I tell myself that
I know what a victim of cyber bullying might feel.
Thank you anyway SHL for your response.
But of course, these are all lies
