       Cuckoo Clocks

Do you have cuckoo clocks in your country?

They're funny but they can also be really annoying because the
cuckoo comes out of the little window every hour and it can make
quite a lot of noise. I wonder if people outside Europe ever
       heard of them.

Cuckoo clocks. They're one of those classic things, aren't they?
Everyone knows what cuckoo clocks are and everyone's ....oh,
hold on. Now I come to think of it, I don't think I've ever
actually seen one. Not in real life. I don't think I've come
face to face with a real-life, chiming, chirruping cuckoo clock.

I've seen them in antique shops but I think I've only ever seen
one at someone's house. I remember thinking "they have a cuckoo
clock, how cool is that" and then it scared the hell out of me
       when it went off.

They were popular here up until maybe the 1940s or so. I own two
or three of them and at one time had them in our parlor. But
they were rather annoying, as you said. And they're very finicky
to keep in time. If even a slight breeze blows on the pendulum
they'll go out of time or stop working altogether. They're in a
       box somewhere.
Come to think of it, my dad a huge one that he always kept
       running.

We didn't have a cuckoo but we did have an antique clock that
ticked very loudly, chimed the hours, and had a special chime
every 15 minutes. You had to wind it with a key.
No one in the house would wind it and of course I had to find
out why. So I wound it up and it ran all day and all night
ticking and chiming. By morning the rest of the family were
coming for me with torches and pitchforks and a noose.

I never owned nor would have wanted to own one. They are still
popular among Asian tourists. Those who travel to Europe in one
week and buy watches for 5000 dollars on the Jungfraujoch (one
of the highest mountains accessible by train) and cuckoo clocks
in Gstaad or Sankt Moritz. In the town where I live, there is a
souvenir shop who sells plenty of them. I am amazed that the
business is still going pretty well. The picture was taken in
       that shop.

As you can see from the price tags they are expensive since they
are sophisticated. There is the cuckoo that comes out but also
small figures. I wonder if they still are produced in the Alps
or if they come from China.

You can buy copies on Ali Baba or AliExpress a Chinese wholesale
       company.

       Those remind me of the
       Woody Woodpecker cartoon.
I have never seen one for irl or even heard of anyone who owns
       one... er... or three!
I certainly can’t speak for the whole “out of Europe”, but for
me they’re the kind of things you just see in books or on
telly... like those soldier nutcrackers (do I need to say I
bought one as soon as I found it?)

I have never owned one but I know quite a few people who do--
probably because there are many Kansas´s of German descent. I
think they the clocks are cute to watch and listen to one time.
       But once is enough.
