       The Mysterious Bridge Cleaner

This is something that happened in Prague recently. Drunk
tourists sprayed graffiti onto one of the pillars of Charles
Bridge, Prague's iconic landmark from the 15th century. This was
mid-July. The conservator-restorers started thinking about how
they were going to remove it, and estimated it would take
approximately a month. Two weeks had gone and nothing had been
done. Then one morning, the graffiti was gone. Shocked by its
disappearance, the restorers told the media that it must have
been removed unprofessionally, the pillar might be damaged or
require additional cleaning and they were not at all impressed.
A few days later, a guy stepped forward to admit he was the one
who had cleaned the bridge. As it turned out, he knew very well
what he was doing because he's a professional facade cleaner. He
used a method that is quick and gentle to the surface and
managed to remove the graffiti in two hours. He said he was
worried about the bridge because the paint shouldn't be left
there longer than two weeks. And indeed, it was decided the
bridge hadn't suffered any damage from the cleaning.
This guy became everyone's hero and was praised on social media
and TV. The Mayor of Prague arranged for him to meet the
conservator-restorers and show them how he'd cleaned the bridge.
He also offered him a reward but the guy said no. Then he
explained why he was uncomfortable with both the reward and all
the positive attention he'd been receiving. "I'm not a
celebrity," he said, "many years ago, I committed a double
murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison".
He killed his wife and a guy she'd been seeing, and tried to
kill himself by shooting himself from under the chin but the
bullet came out through his forehead and he survived. In prison,
he focused on self-study and contemplated ways to repay what he
felt he owed to society. He was released after 11 years, went to
the UK to learn about new methods for graffiti removal.
And now he cleaned the bridge.

What a story! Sometimes real life is more intriguing than a
       novel.
