Question for Sofia! And maybe Nikola :-)
By: NealC Date: August 10, 2019, 3:25 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Ok Italian speakers and students, reddit posted this today and
it got a LOT of attention. People love making fun of idiot
American tourists. First the story.
A woman and her family are touring Italy and while in Merane
they decide to go to a restaurant that has one Michelin star.
This is her review:
Skip!!
We had dinner here this week. We were 8 people so many dishes
were tasted.
what can i say? In one word- bad!
In two words - very bad!
price - reasonable.
food- pretentious and just bad.
Kids friendly- Not at all, even though claims to be.
Bottom line- Don’t waste your time or your money. Better
off grab a pizza or a even Macdonalds, where there is a slightly
more correlation between what you’re getting and what you
are expecting to..
Nice eh? Here is the chef's response in Italian:
Signora H.S
Andrea Fenoglio
English translation:
Mrs H.S
I'm very sorry you didn't like our work.
The beauty of traveling is to discover the area, get to know
people and taste what you eat in other parts of the way.
We always meet the needs of all children but when children are
17/18/19 years old and in their lives eat only aurora pasta with
ketchup and cream every day, it can become a huge problem if you
find a restaurant that he does not have Ketchup at home, and
this can clearly infuriate Mother who already has so many daily
thoughts.
In the future I will not buy Ketchup, and you will bring your
big children to Mc Donald where everyone will be satisfied, us
too.

Ok, funny story, big score for the chef!
BUT my question.
There is a slight disagreement among people on reddit. Most
think that she and her family actually asked for ketchup on
their pasta. I think the chef was only remarking on their
tastes, that the kids wouldn't know good food as they are used
to eating crap.
People arguing for the ketchup as a metaphor argument are being
told that the idea is "lost in translation", the family did ask
for actual ketchup. I completely disagree, i see very plain
Italian words, nothing lost in translation, there is no real
ketchup, ketchup is being used as a metaphor for ruined taste
buds.
Am I wrong?

How disappointing to be served actual food. Shame on you, Italy.
Anyway, if we go with your theory, the part about the restaurant
not having any ketchup and this being an "enorme problema"
sounds a bit too random to me, especially since she had
complained about the place not being kids friendly. It does
sound like the missing link. When I first read it, it made me
wonder if it was his way of saying "oh, I know who you are,
you're the mother who asked for ketchup and then kicked up a
fuss". It's not said explicitly, though, so who knows.

Neal I am not sure how to answer about your question and I
didn’t know how to look up Reddit.
I found the post and the answer on TripAdvisor.
HTML https://www.tripadvisor.it/Restaurant_Review-g187860-d1239081-Reviews-Sissi_Andrea_Fenoglio-Merano_Province_of_South_Tyrol_Trentino_Alto_Adige.html
The restaurant exists. Must be an upscale restaurant in Merano
in the bilingual region of Trentino Alto Adige. Has an
interesting menu, a bit expensive. Good reviews by most of TA
members.
The chef doesn’t write very well in Italian, but I can
understand that he was upset.
He seems however to have recognized the customer who wrote the
review. This review is very agressive, doesn’t give any hint on
the reason why the writer found the dinner bad. One can check on
TA if the contributor wrote other reviews and if he has a
differentiated way of seeing and judging things. This person
wrote only three reviews and the only positive one was about a
Segway tour. (I will not write what I think about that, I would
be afraid to offend people who like this kind of activity).
I do not know if he/she asked Ketchup for the teenage children
or if it is a metaphor used by the chef. In his restaurant they
offer spaghetti with tomato sauce as a kid’s menu. To compare a
one star Michelin restaurant to McDonalds is rude and silly.
Intentionally made to offend. One can wonder if this contributor
is a real customer or maybe an enemy of chef Andrea Fenoglio who
wants to discredit him.

The text of the chef isn’t clear. I guess however that the
children, probably 14-15 years old but very tall asked a kid’s
menu (spaghetti with tomato sauce) while it is expected in Italy
to take a more sophisticated dish at this age.
Maybe they complained saying that the sauce wasn’t enough saucy.
Anyway, I tend to think that the chief used Ketchup* in a
metaphorical way to retaliate and offend. But nothing is sure.
These are mere speculations.
We could write to the chef and ask him...

* PS: nothing against ketchup. I have a French Canadian friend
who makes homemade ketchup and offers small bottles to friends
exactly how an Italian (male) friend prepares tomato pasta sauce
and sterilize it and puts it in bottle for gifts.

Oh my! I found the discussion on Reddit (thank you Google, Duck
Duck Go wasn’t able)
;D

The discussion doesn’t seem very academic. Anyway the fonts on
Reddit are as small as arabic fonts. I will not get addicted at
that discussion board.

I love the snarky anche noi at the end of the restaurant's
comment!

I liked the chef's response so much I gave them a 5 star review
on Trip Advisor :-)

Sofia, Reddit can be fun, there are groups there discussing
almost anything you can think of. Very addicting!

Ha, ha 5 Stelle. The chef will believe that you sympathize for
Beppe Grillo’s party (5 Star Movement). They are having a big
mess right now with the Lega in Italy.
