More Gun Violence in the US..Another reason it’s a very dangerou
s place

I think the EU and its individual member states should issue
strong warnings on its website about the dangers of traveling to
the US, warning people not to go unless absolutely unavoidable.
This hopefully will shut down the travel industry to the US
until gun controls are put in place. Gun violence is not caused
my mentally disturbed individuals, in fact the contrary is true.
Mentally disturbed people are more likely to be the victims of
gun violence.

I think the fear of terrorist attacks are overblown by media out
of proportion. How much people were killed? 20 or 40? It is just
a weak statistics. It is not like a few thousands. Steve, it is
way more likely to get killed in car accident or murdered by
drunk buddy but those don't make news unless there is nothing
to report.

Ok. A guy gets in a car, drives 8 hours from Dallas to El Paso,
and goes to a Wal-Mart to shoot people there because it is more
likely a good percentage of his victims will be Hispanic and
this person is NOT mentally ill?
Steven what do you have to do to meet the Democracy Now
definition of Mentally Ill? Be a Trump supporter?

I made my opinion on gun control in the US clear elsewhere (if
too many people handle them irresponsibly, they probably
shouldn't be allowed to have them, while in other countries it
might work fine) but I want to say I agree that the media
usually makes these situations worse and contributes to
spreading the fear, which is exactly what those people want. One
has to always consider the probability of it happening and the
impact, basically make a risk assessment. The irrational fear
can be very strong because it stems from the randomness of the
time and place. It makes you feel like nowhere is safe, I guess
it's not called terrorism for nothing.
This incident happened on my usual route in London:
HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parsons_Green_train_bombing.
I got
to Wimbledon station, where the train had left from. It was
literally minutes after the explosion, and the services had just
stopped running so I went and got the bus, not knowing that
there had been an explosion two stops away from my usual stop.
They used a timer so it could have exploded anywhere, given the
often chaotic system of train departures from Wimbledon station.
No one died, 30 people were injured and 19 had to be taken to
hospital, so no big deal you could say. Also, the same thing is
unlikely to happen at the same place again. Still, it took me a
while to feel relaxed again on that line, on my way to work.
There's only so much the rational part of the brain can do for
you. I wish the media stopped feeding the irrational part with
images, grim details a headlines aiming to shock.

Well, yes that’s an easy way to start.
The answer to the extreme gun violence is a) repeal the 2
Amendment, 2) ban all guns except hunting rifles for hunters
where they have to keep their rifles locked every day up at a
private hunting club, and be a member, lock up the ammo too
(like they do in the UK), and only use the rifle on the hunting
grounds. Require the hunting members take and pass an expensive
course in rife safety, and carry a government-issued license to
use the gun for hunting on the member facility only, and 3)
dissolve the NRA. Ban them.

So we are going to repeal the Second Amendment, and violate the
First.
That's a great plan Steven, you're a genius.

Nikola
We had a shooting a long time ago on a commuter railroad - it
was my train! It was the 5:23 (or something) to Hicksville.
years had gone by but it was still 'my train'. I would get out
of my job on Wall Street (lasted 3 months there), take the
subway to Penn Station, took that train home.

I remember people were saying "Gun Control" then, one woman lost
a husband and a son (maybe one was wounded)and she ran for
Congress on a Gun Control platform.
I remember telling my wife if I ever got shot on a Commuter
train and the media came to interview her that she should yell
and scream that her husband was dead because NYCity made guns
illegal, and her husband was made a sitting duck.

The thing is, Neal, only someone who believes that such things
can change overnight, without a single problem or incident,
would take that as a proof that gun control is bad. It is ironic
and it is understandable that your wife would say that, at the
same time it does seem a bit short-sighted to me. Wouldn't you
sacrifice that bit of security now in exchange for a safer
country in the future (as opposed to one that has spiraled into
complete craziness where everyone is being paranoid and shooting
at everyone)? It may not be so bad right now but how do you stop
it from getting worse?

HTML https://www.yahoo.com/news/red-flag-laws-could-made-004621596.html
It is not that absolutely nothing is being done. But so much
more could be done. I think more states are likely to pass ¨red
flag laws.¨
I watched this video recently.
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXlnrFpCu0c&t=1s
I am sure all
of the Americans here remember Columbine-- but for the rest--
Columbine was the first really big school shooting in the U.S.
This is the mother of one of the shooters giving her story and
talking about what has, and what has not changed since
Columbine.
But most people are focusing only on prevention at the very late
stages. President Trump gave a speech recently calling these
shooters ¨monsters¨ and ¨wicked péople¨ as if they are just
anomalies and not a symptom of the mental health of a large
number of youth. All the controversy is about gun control,
instead of looking at the lack of societal aid and support for
children as they develop-- which is much more difficult to
provide and to measure.

I come across as a complete gun nut but in reality I am much
more reserved. I quit the NRA years ago because they are insane
- no controls at all. I support the "red flag" type laws, have
for years, support a national database and national control, gun
safety course requirements (I would make it mandatory in
schools), you name it.
It is also a mental health issue, especially among the younger
shooters. A lot of them are on psychotropic drugs and I think
there needs to be more supervision and reticence handing them
out to children. I believe the two Columbine kids were on them.
What is the difference between today and 50 years ago when
Americans were even more armed and yet shootings were unheard
of? Mental Health and psychotropic drugs.
