Anyone afraid of flying?

I wanted to start a new thread so as not to deviate from the one
on high school friends.
I can‘t say I‘m afraid of flying, but the experience is not
pleasant anymore for me, like it used to be. Maybe it´s just age
or something. But, I have met people who really have a phobia of
flying.
The reason this is on my mind, is I’m in Iceland now and have a
7 hour flight ahead of me at 5:00 this afternoon to Seattle.
Yesterday, I flew in from Berlin. Icelandair had to lease a
Boeing 767 from EuroAtlantic, a carrier I had never heard of out
of Portugal. The seats were so small the one I was in gave me a
backache, even only after a three hour trip. It was pretty
uncomfortable. I can say, flying is not what it used to be.
Before it was much more comfortable, food and drinks were free
(except for alcoholic drinks- you had to buy those, but could
pay cash, unlike now where everything is credit cards). The
seats were bigger too with more legroom. There they really took
care of you. Now, it‘s not the same.
Sometimes we forget the people in the cockpit are just like the
rest of us. They have their good days and bad.
The high school friend I mentioned on the other thread was not a
great pilot, although he started out in high school flying small
planes. But, his father had been an American Airlines pilot for
years and was pretty good, but then the father was a former
military pilot in the Air Force. I think they make the best
pilots. That military training is worth a lot and the experience
they gather stays with them a lifetime.

I never was afraid of flying but conditions on airplanes
deteriorated a lot since low-cost companies came up and squeezed
the prices. What I find boring is the long waiting time at
airports for security reasons. Of course I am grateful that
security checks exist, though sometimes they aren’t very
serious.

Im terribly afraid of heights but amazingly not at all afraid of
flying. I am pretty sure everyone gets a little unsettled
during take off and landing but otherwise I am perfectly fine.
You are right about comfort, I am a big guy and planes are
increasingly uncomfortable. I am fairly serious that the
longest flight I took (NY to Tahiti - 14 hours), if I had not
paid for the upgrade to business class the economy class would
have killed me. Too long in a little seat, with no leg room and
stale air.

Flying nowadays is not fun. Unfortunately the tight security is
necessary, like you said unless you pay extra for a decent sized
sear, anything much over 7 or 8 hours is a killer.
