Re: Back to Angela Davis SPLIT FROM Stripping off clothes? Those

Steven, I am actually a bit shocked that you would think that
anything I said here about Angela Davis comes from being
influenced by Jerry and Neal rather than from knowing what my
country (and several other countries) have been through.

Fair enough. I take that back. Jerry and Neal don’t influence
you at all, I‘m quite sure. Those two have their own far-right
agendas. They might influence some people, but not everyone of
course (not me).
Jerry and Neal are just predictable is all I should have said. I
don’t want to get you upset, so please accept my apologies.
Anyway, a bit off topic, but I hope you are holding up under
this heatwave. It really is awful, isn’t it? And no A/C outside
of the cars (the Skoda has a good one).
But, back to Angela Davis for a second. I don’t know what she
was up to in the 70s and 80s. I was too young to pay attention,
but I do recall my older sister cheering when Angela Davis was
acquitted in 1972. I‘ll never forget that.
I did notice ONE MAJOR discrepancy in the English Wikipedia
article on her and the German one you might find interesting.
Compare:
5] In fact, Jiří Pelikán wrote an open letter asking her to
support Czech prisoners, which Davis refused, believing that the
Czech prisoners were undermining the Husák government and that
Pelikán, in exile in Italy, was attacking his own country.[66]
Regarding Czech prisoners being "persecuted by the state", Davis
responded "They deserve what they get. Let them remain in
prison." [67]
67. Solzhenitsyn, Aleksandr Isaevich 1918-2008 (1975).
Solzhenitsyn: The Voice of Freedom. dudeman5685. Washington, DC:
Washington : American Federation of Labor and Congress of
Industrial Organizations.
The German version:
........ Ihm zufolge hatte eine Gruppe tschechischer Dissidenten
an sie appelliert. Davis habe sich geweigert, für diese
einzutreten. Davis habe geantwortet: „Sie verdienen das, was sie
bekommen. Lasst sie im Gefängnis bleiben.“(67) Angela Davis
bestritt diese Anschuldigung.[8]
8. Angela Davis, Q&A after a speech: Engaging Diversity on
Campus: The Curriculum and the Faculty. East Stroudsburg
University, Pennsylvania, 15. Oktober 2006.
Why was this last sentence omitted from the English version with
its 2006 citation, and only the same old 44 year old reference
from 1975 given?

It's OK Steven, apology accepted. I just felt it was devaluing
my opinion (and also wasn't true), that's why I decided to say
something.
As for the quote, I'm not sure what you mean. Aren't the two
sentences (in English and German) identical in terms of their
meaning?

Thanks Nikola. I really respect you so, if I ever say anything
stupid again, just tell me to hush up (or shut up if you like,
or something). I won’t be offended. You are the last person
(Alharacas, and Sofia included) I‘d intend to upset. Seriously.
Susan is okay too. As to Jerry and Neal? Well, I‘m sending them
each „Assata Shakur is welcome here“ placards for the entrance
to their homes. :)
And the 8th referenced sentence in the German version, totally
omitted from the English, (following „Let them remain in
prison“) (67), is „Angela Davis bestritt diese Anschuldigung.“
Angela Davis disputed/denied this accusation. Footnote 8. Why
was this omitted from the English?

She is a thug Steven. What else do you call a person who revels
in the role of government to spy on, torture and imprison people
to keep her vision of socialism alive? She never beat anyone
up. She supported governments that beat people up and despite
her little spruce up for the cameras on Democracy Now she has
said over and over she still supports it. She is terrified the
one remaining country she admired will fall under a flood of
freedom on her watch - "Support Cuba, now more than ever". A
pathetic attempt to keep the inevitable from happening. Set the
Cubans FREE!
It would please me immensely if Cuba became truly free and she
had to watch it happen.

Angela Davis did say that in the former Soviet Bloc States
socialism fell because the socialism we saw in many places,
„needed to be engaged more critically, it needed more democracy
there“ and, as Nikola noted, she said a little euphemistically,
it needed „a little more here and there“. She went on to say
capitalism didn‘t prevail because it was superior, it failed by
default. That means she said the way countries in the world
which formally called themselves Communist, or Socialist, were
not run properly (and I think it‘s clear that she was implying
that their human rights record also left something to be
desired, but then so does Saudi Arabia’s, the US‘s big buddy).
But, she made these points:
1) Under socialism you didn‘t have to worry about paying for
your education,
2) You didn‘t have a disproportionate part of your income going
into housing, as is the case now in the US. Housing, a place
where you can just rest up before going to work for THE MAN
again, and
3) Healthcare wasn’t a commodity.
She said she didn‘t know how she could go on with her struggles
if she didn‘t believe that someday socialism would prevail.
