I'm sorry, Nikola. I didn't mean the GDP comparison as a show of
superiority or anything like that. It just seemed like a useful
way to illustrate a large number, that's all. :)
The US does a magnificent job of taking care of the poor. I in
no way want to dismantle that system. Not at all. Changes need
to be made, and some have been, even by Clinton and Obama.
There's a lot of fraud, waste, and abuse in the system. That
money needs to be redirected back to where it's really needed.
That would be care of old people [ like Steve ] children, and
those who can't work through no fault of their own.
Now can you and Irena admit that I'm not a hard-hearted SOB? ;)

We knew that because you read to blind people on the radio.
Winding you up is good fun, though.

       not-entirely-legal and not-entirely-safe business practices.

Please elaborate, Irena. I haven't been out in the world very
       much. I'm just a sheltered small-town boy.

Hmm... And what if it's false? Can I/we get sued for spreading

You call greyhound an upgrade? My heart goes out to you Irena.
You must have been a little down on your luck at the time.
Gosh, I can’t imagine the people riding greyhounds.

I took Megabus in the US. It worked out cheaper.

There was an epidemic of those falling on their sides a few
years ago. It happened several times on the interstate here in
Indiana. Those are the $1 fares, right? Big green buses.

And we don’t have a TÜV, like in Germany to inspect the
roadworthiness of cars on the road, so unless a car‘s wheels are
falling off, no one is going to pay any attention.
       [/quote]
California tests each and every vehicle for emissions.
Automobiles made to be driven in the state of CA are equipped
with special emissions equipment. I know because I own a
California emission-equipped vehicle. And I'm sure that they
inspect the roadworthiness of every vehicle. The New England
states are very strict about this. There's so much salt on the
roads that cars and trucks only last a few years.
       Also:

And this, you can't do a driving test in Vietnamese: 11.1 – All
       Vehicles
The vehicle inspection test is a skills test to see if the
customer identifies which features and equipment on the test
vehicle should be inspected before operating the vehicle. The
entire vehicle inspection test must be conducted in the English
language, pursuant to CFR, Title 49 §§391.11(b)(2) and
       383.133(c)(5).
If you communicate in a language other than English or fail to
comprehend instructions given to you in English, during the
skills tests (vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and road
test) you will receive a verbal warning for the first 2 offenses
committed on the same test date. Upon the third offense
committed on the same test date, the test will end as an
       automatic failure.

Jerry, i don’t know about all these sites you are posting but
all I do is go in for a smog check every 2 or 3 years and that’s
it. No one checks my tires to make sure they’re not falling off.
You know the whole thing is sort of a joke.
And who is calling whom old?

That's what the CA in the URL means.

In NY it is a yearly inspection, both smog and safety.
Surprised California does not have a safety inspection.

Smog check every 2 or 3 years and that’s it. The wheels could be
about to fall off and no one would even know.
