Now, wait a minute, Steve. Aren't you supposed to be the
socialist on this forum? So you're supposed to support sharing.
Including transportation sharing. Which is what I was doing. ;D
Anyway, I rode the Greyhound a number of times. Can't complain.
Professional drivers and all. I liked the lecture one driver
gave us about how he was going to get us to our destination
safely rather than quickly. (We were having some bad weather, if
I recall correctly.)
And actually, Greyhound was my upgrade! For a while, I only took
the Chinatown buses. Very cheap. But there were all these rumors
about them involving various not-entirely-legal and
not-entirely-safe business practices. (I don't know if any of
those rumors were true, though.) So, I eventually upgraded to
Greyhound. 8)

Seriously, Steve, you remind me of this anarchist (or
"anarchist") girl I knew in college who once covered her dorm
room walls with Mussolini pictures. She said she didn't like his
politics, she just liked him as a person. ::) Anyway, kinda
like you and your socialism.

And we don’t have a TÜV, like in Germany to inspect the
roadworthiness of cars on the road, so unless a car‘s wheels are
falling off, no one is going to pay any attention.
California tests each and every vehicle for emissions.
Automobiles made to be driven in the state of CA are equipped
with special emissions equipment. I know because I own a
California emission-equipped vehicle. And I'm sure that they
inspect the roadworthiness of every vehicle. The New England
states are very strict about this. There's so much salt on the
roads that cars and trucks only last a few years.
Also:

And this, you can't do a driving test in Vietnamese: 11.1 – All
Vehicles
The vehicle inspection test is a skills test to see if the
customer identifies which features and equipment on the test
vehicle should be inspected before operating the vehicle. The
entire vehicle inspection test must be conducted in the English
language, pursuant to CFR, Title 49 §§391.11(b)(2) and
383.133(c)(5).
If you communicate in a language other than English or fail to
comprehend instructions given to you in English, during the
skills tests (vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and road
test) you will receive a verbal warning for the first 2 offenses
committed on the same test date. Upon the third offense
committed on the same test date, the test will end as an
automatic failure.

Nikola, I really don't think we should be telling Americans how
to arrange their society. If they fail to take passably good
care of their less fortunate compatriots, then their society
will fall apart on its own. But it's their country, so...
I think that telling them how to do it would look a bit
different. I was just comparing it to a smaller-scale model,
acknowledging that the the individual members (some of them,
that is important in my opinion) will see the two options as two
equal alternatives. Of course the ones who are used to taking
care of absolutely everything won't see it that way. It's not my
place to say what Americans should do about it or whether they
should do anything at all but finding it terrifying is something
I honestly can't help :)
Jerry, bringing up the GDP of the Czech Republic in this context
seems absolutely irrelevant. We're half the size of New York
(the state) with half of its population. Of course various
things that your country spends money on will be our GDP times
X. You're big, we're small :)

You call greyhound an upgrade? My heart goes out to you Irena.
You must have been a little down on your luck at the time.
Gosh, I can’t imagine the people riding greyhounds. Jerry or
Neal will never be found on one of them.
Business class on a plane is an upgrade to me.
And I do believe in sharing. Sharing is caring as they say. :)

I'm sorry, Nikola. I didn't mean the GDP comparison as a show of
superiority or anything like that. It just seemed like a useful
way to illustrate a large number, that's all. :)
The US does a magnificent job of taking care of the poor. I in
no way want to dismantle that system. Not at all. Changes need
to be made, and some have been, even by Clinton and Obama.
There's a lot of fraud, waste, and abuse in the system. That
money needs to be redirected back to where it's really needed.
That would be care of old people [ like Steve ] children, and
those who can't work through no fault of their own.
Now can you and Irena admit that I'm not a hard-hearted SOB? ;)

I took Megabus in the US. It worked out cheaper.

Please elaborate, Irena. I haven't been out in the world very
much. I'm just a sheltered small-town boy.

See, Steve? If you ever get sick and tired of the US again, just
hop on a long distance bus. You might run into some Europeans.
