Owning a car is not within her means. How would you have her
get about? Seriously. What would you have her do?
This points up the basic philosophical difference that I always
talk about. Europeans view the role of government as nanny and
rich uncle. The Americans. on the whole, at least historically,
don't.

Okay, but what would you have her do? The cleaning lady, I mean.
And what about people who simply cannot drive (due to a
disability, say)? If they're rich, they can hire a driver.
Otherwise?

I reject the idea that government exists to solve every problem
that we face in life. Europeans disagree with me. That's okay. I
still love you guys. :-*

It's hardly every problem. Just some problems. ;)

I have no clue how to solve problems like this. Which is one of
many reasons that I never ran for public office [ well, I did
run for one ] and never will.

Well this is new to me. It sounds a bit like... you know that
reality show where two wives swap families? Wife Swap? Don't
know which countries have it and which don't. This is like one
family where people put money together, talk about their
problems and make decisions together, eat together. And another
family where dad makes money and dines at a restaurant, while
mum looks after one child because she doesn't like the other two
so they have to go through the bins outside. And the second
mother says "we just do it differently, it works for us".

Are the bins outside of a nice restaurant?

Nikola, I really don't think we should be telling Americans how
to arrange their society. If they fail to take passably good
care of their less fortunate compatriots, then their society
will fall apart on its own. But it's their country, so...

HTML https://federalsafetynet.com/welfare-budget.html
"Welfare programs spent $354 billion in fiscal year 2018 and
2017 (detailed below). The welfare budget also includes the
Medicaid Program which is a program for health care for the
low-income Americans. With the inclusion of Medicaid the
overall spending on welfare totaled $754 billion in fiscal year
2018 and $729 billion in 2017. This represents 18% of the
spending in the entire federal government.
Size of Welfare Budget
When added together the 13 programs making up the welfare budget
have historically represented the third largest entitlement
program – larger than the Unemployment and Medicaid Programs and
smaller than Medicare and Social Security. In fiscal year 2016
Medicaid spending surpassed welfare spending on the 13 programs
due to the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act
(ObamaCare) - see the Medicaid page."
So you can see that we spend about three times more than the
entire GDP of the Czech Republic. In fact, most poor families in
the US live better than most of the rest of the world's
population. The poor in the US have little to complain about.
Our welfare state is massive and has been growing since about
1965. It's a huge drag on the economy

Jerry, it's not mine to judge if your poor are sufficiently well
taken care of. It is somewhat funny, though, that you seem proud
of the way your country takes care of the less fortunate, and at
the same time, you wish to dismantle the whole system. Or maybe
I'm misreading you.

Well yeah, except for the homeless
Well, I wouldn’t be caught dead riding a bus in the US. Again,
those are for broke people, or the homeless. I mean, if you
don’t mind sitting next to some woman who thinks she’s seeing
pink dinosaurs and deal with all that drama, it’s okay with me.
Also, I’m shocked Irena actually rode a Greyhound once. My god,
boy that really means you’re down on your luck (why not just
take a plane?)Do people still ride Greyhounds?
And Amtrak is a joke. It’s like something out of the 19th
century. Everything is to far away for a train. Flying is even
cheaper than that dopey Amtrak.
And used cars are cheap. You can buy a used car for $500. And
anyone who isn’t blind or hasnˋt had 4 drunk driving
convictions in the last year can get a drivers license. And they
give the test in like 6 languages, so you can take it in
Vietnamese if you like.
And we don’t have a TÜV, like in Germany to inspect the
roadworthiness of cars on the road, so unless a car‘s wheels are
falling off, no one is going to pay any attention. So, I think
that’s why it’s such a car culture.
