And how do you feel about the government determining where you
go and when?
No one has answered this.

being able to move about is one of the requirements of modern
life, isn't it? So, what would we have our respective
governments do?

Yes, Jerry, I know that in certain parts of the US, a car is
practically a requirement. Not so in Europe. I'd rather it
remained that way, all this government talk notwithstanding.

Jerry, I don't know whether it's any consolation, but it's no
different in Germany (and probably also in other countries

Yes, I'm aware of that fact. It's also a fact that no municipal
bus service anywhere in the world has ever turned a profit. But
just because Europe is doing it doesn't mean that I want to do
it.

It's frightening to most Americans to be told that their
government will dictate their movements. Europe is used to being
told what to do and how to do it by governments, Americans
aren't. It's a different mindset we have. Europeans prefer
government control of their lives. Americans prefer freedom and
self-determination.

I have no argument with that. None at all. It's always been my
position. :-* :D

European countries are tiny compared to the US. You have to have
buses and trains. There's no way the cities could handle a
similar number of cars that we have in the US. I get that. It's
basic city planning.

That, too. In some parts of Prague, it's a challenge to get by
on foot. Not because of the distances involved. No, no. Because
of all the tourists. (Have you ever been to the Times Square?
Kinda like that.) I don't even want to imagine what would happen
if everyone had a car and actually used it. :o

But, Jerry, once you've decided that stepping over the odd
starved corpse on your way to the shops or elswhere is not a
desirable option (or have you?), you do have to make one or two
compromises along the way, you know. ;)
Let's say you've got a not very bright, not very educated woman
living in a not very desirable part of the city. She's good at
cleaning, though, so that's how she makes her living. People
willing to employ her do not live within walking/cycling
distance of where she lives, apartments close to her employers
are not within her means. Owning a car is not within her means.
How would you have her get about? Seriously. What would you have
her do?

This points up the basic philosophical difference that I always
talk about. Europeans view the role of government as nanny and
rich uncle. The Americans. on the whole, at least historically,
don't. It's all rooted in different histories.
I reject the idea that government exists to solve every problem
that we face in life. Europeans disagree with me. That's okay. I
still love you guys. :-*
