Unite For Literacy
By: Susan Date: July 22, 2019, 10:34 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I am continuing to explore the resources I have found through my
public library.
Do you all have access to www.uniteforliteracy.com? They have
children´s books-- especially a lot of books about animals,
science, and careers. You choose a written language (either
English or Spanish), but then you choose a narration language
from one of 43 different languages (including Arabic and Farsi).
When you look at the books, as you turn each page, you can look
at the pictures and the written language you chose, and you can
click the sound icon to hear it in your chosen narration
language.

This is really cool. They even have American Sign Language
there.

What a lovely resource, Susan!
It's the pictures that really make it work, isn't it? They mean
you can use it at lots of levels.

Susan, I have moved this and your previous post about LibriVox
to Other Websites and Resources because I think learners might
find them very useful and they might not think to look in Found
on the Internet. Hope that's ok.

Yes, it actually works, even in Germany! :o
Thank you very much, Susan!
They only have a handful of books in Farsi, but since I'm a
beginner, it will take me ages just to work through the 9
riveting pages of "Eyes like these". :D

Really nice Susan, your librarians are a source of treasures.
It amazes me how the digital voices• are quite good in Arabic
and French. I like the Italian female voice a bit less and
wonder what accent has the Spanish one, I guess Mexican. The
translations, in my opinion, are computer made with inevitable
glitches .
I even found a recipe for making homemade Granola. Ha, ha. I
will give it a try!
Merci, gracias, vielen Dank, grazie,
شكرًا
• they pretend that there are native speakers, maybe I am wrong.

Sorry Susan, this website is absolutely catastrophic for Arabic.
:'( I listened to some short simple stories and the translation
to Arabic is on the level we had on Bing 5 years ago.
I checked Google translate that has also an audio feature and it
is more then acceptable if one writes small simple phrases.
So I cannot recommend it, despite my previous enthusiasm.

Slovak, on the other hand, is very good :)

Admittedly, I only listened to a few samples in German and
Spanish (apart from Farsi), but so far, the translation looked
and sounded perfectly idiomatic to me, in both languages. The
German speaker didn't even have a trace of any accent, perfect
high German, ideal, even though she does speak veeeery, veeeeery
slowly (in fact, that's the kind of speech I'd been hoping for
in Farsi ;) ). I'm really bad at identifying Spanish accents
from overseas, so you may well be right that she's Mexican,
Sofia.

In Arabic there are some very basics errors about simple rules
that are taught at the third lesson of a beginner's course.
Exemple Sun and Moon letters. The L of the article AL is
normally assimilated by the following consonant if it starts
with an S and some other letters.
So one says Assalam and not al Salam like pronounced in a text.
Google usually gets it right.
