She taught at the University of California, Los Angeles,
teaching philosophy from 1969-1970, and Ivy League colleges back
east tried to recruit her, like Swarthmore and Princeton, but
she chose the urban location of LA.

Swarthmore is not Ivy League. (Sorry, couldn't help it.) It's a
small, liberal arts college. It's highly respected for the
undergraduate education that it offers, but it's not Ivy League.
Really? Try applying for admission.
I did. They rejected me. It's still not Ivy League.

I just read this article about her:
HTML https://forward.com/opinion/417302/sorry-angela-davis-is-no-ones-human-rights-hero/<br
/>which confirmed my concerns that she never expressed any regre
t
about supporting totalitarian regimes that had led to the death
of millions of innocent people.
On her trip to East Germany, Davis visited the Berlin Wall,
where 262 people were killed trying to escape from communist
paradise to capitalist hell. A 1972 photo shows her glowing as
she shakes hands with Erich Honecker, the General Secretary of
the East German Communist Party who gave orders to shoot at
escapees.
The same year, Czech journalist Jiri Pelikan, who had been
active in the “Prague Spring” reforms and had to emigrate after
the 1968 Soviet invasion, wrote Davis an open letter expressing
sympathy with her experience as a prisoner and asking her call
for the release of political prisoners in Eastern Europe
(including Czech dissidents who, like himself, were believers in
a more humane communism).
Davis’s friend and spokeswoman Charlene Mitchell told the press
that Davis was not going to respond, since she “did not think
people should leave socialist countries to return to the
capitalist system.” She also said on Davis’s behalf that people
in Eastern Europe were only jailed “if they were undermining the
government.”

I really don’t care if Swarthmore is Ivy League or not. It’s
always been a respected liberal arts college.
Angela Davis has a poignant anecdote she mentioned once in an
interview. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama she said when she
was just a child in the early 1950s an amusement park for kids
opened up, with rides, the whole bit.
She asked her mother if she could go, to which her mother
replied, „no, it’s only for White children.“ She was heartbroken
and asked her mother why. Her mother just looked at her and said
„it’s not supposed to be that way.“

"Ivy League" is not a synonym for "highly respected
college/university." Stanford, for instance, is also highly
respected (more so than most of the Ivies), and it's still not
an Ivy.
And Angela Davis' poignant childhood anecdotes hardly excuse her
support for totalitarian regimes. Especially in the 1970s, when
the track record of those regimes was obvious for anyone who
cared to pay the least amount of attention.

Mods! Help! Irena is trying to hijack my thread to talk about
Ivy League Colleges! :)
(Just kidding Irena. You can hijack the thread. I don’t mind.)

Steve, I was just providing a factual correction (with a helpful
link to Wikipedia) to something you had said. ;)

Angela Davis is an embittered, racist, thug who would use the
worst sort of totalitarianism to force her discredited views on
the public.
She is no longer remembered because those who hate freedom and
uphold violence are rightly consigned to the dustbin of history.

I mean, I can see how she would find such political system
appealing because she felt discriminated against in America.
After all (and she has a point there), you don't have to be
white to do well under the communist regime. All it takes is
moral weakness. In a way, that's equal opportunities, but at
what price?

Absolutely, black people in the south when she grew up were
treated horribly, and it was an in your face sneering sort of
hatred. I understand the bitterness. They way she channeled it
is also indefensible, I don't know how anyone could support it.

An embittered racist thug? A bit extreme, don’t you think? And
why racist of all things? And a thug?
There are two sides to every story and I’d be interested in
hearing hers. She’s no stupid person and is clearly aware of
these accusations. Yet, she became a full tenured Professor at a
public University.
I‘m sure she has something more to say than she couldn’t get
over her bitterness.
