And that thing about you-know-who not being your President,

importantly, don't we already have more than enough you-know-who

Well, too Irena, I also was drawing some parallels of poor
Bulgaria to places like Ohio, they are both a little run-down.
But, Bulgaria has a lot of potential. Ohio and those places like
that have no potential. They are hopeless. There‘s a lot of hope
in Bulgaria being part of the EU. That’s huge. Bulgaria is just
a diamond-in-the-rough as they say.

Oh dear. I was just taking a shower. Steven, we need some
threads without this, please.

Nikola, just go ahead and split the thread - well, cut out that
one particular post - why don't you?
Steven, Irena wasn't talking about your last post, but about the
one before.
Irena, Neal, I seem to remember having read an article about
Bulgaria lately, according to which the country was doing quite
well, on the whole.
The problem with those villages is the same all over Europe - we
have them in Germany, too, although more in the Eastern part. I
even saw a documentary on TV about China, recently, and it's
happening there, too. Agriculture is either not viable
(anymore), or wages are too low, or fewer people are needed ->
young people leave for the big cities -> old people are left to
fend for themselves -> villages die.

Alharacas, I wasn't going to because I assumed Neal was
responding to it. Only just noticed after you said it that
Steven had already said the same thing before.
Steven, rest assured your comment hasn't been deleted. It's

I'm sorry, I must have been confused. Not doing well at all, no.
At least, this article was somewhat upbeat (growing numbers of
successful young people migrating back to Bulgaria):

According to this one, however, workers in the textile industry
are actually worse off in Bulgaria than in Asia:

Right, the small villages all over Europe. People hate to see
it, but the younger people are voting with their feet and moving
to the city.
You are seeing the opposite in the big cities in the US, the
middle class and especially families are moving out, the cost of
living is just too high. The New York neighborhood shops are
disappearing too, due to high taxes, rents and online
competition. Lots of empty retail space in NY City.

Thank you, mods, for rescuing my thread. 8)
Nikola (I think it was Nikola) had a thread about charming
villages. I remember thinking that the villages I knew weren't
all that charming. Although the one from the video is a whole
new level of depressing. But perhaps some European villages
still are truly charming. ;)
Anyway, for the Balkan countries that recently entered the EU,
the main effect seems to have been depopulation. Enterprising
young people just pack up and leave, sometimes sending some
money to their aging parents back home, and sometimes not even
that. Actually, that's been the case with all of Balkans, pretty
much, but integration into the EU accelerates it. (If you want
to go to Germany from Serbia, which is not a part of the EU,
then you need a skillset that will convince the Germans to give
you a work visa. If you want to go to Germany from Bulgaria,
which is part of the EU, then you just pack your bags, head to
Berlin, and figure things out once you get there.) Good news for
people who want the hell out, bad news for the country as a
whole. Eventually, a new wave of migrants will move and settle
in, I suppose. With 7 billion humans on this planet, no livable
piece of land can remain unpopulated for very long.
