Walking Papers/A Minority of People

I just saw a new study [ sorry, can't find the story just now ]
that said that only 18% of American citizens would like to move
to another country. So contrary to what you may have heard,
there's not a stampede at our borders of people fleeing the US.
Leaving is not exactly a popular thing to do when you live in
the US. Again, you may hear otherwise, but it's not true.

Yeah, 20% is pretty high. But it's not the near 100% level that
'some' person or person touts as the real figure. That was my
point. Even if the poll is inaccurate, I would doubt very much
that it's off by that margin.

If my calculations are correct, [ and most likely they aren't ]
18% of 330 million is about 59 million. California has roughly
39 million people. We could clear out California and New York
City [ pop. 8.5 million] and Chicago [ 2.8 million ] and still
have about 9 million spots leftover. Sounds like a winner to me.

I don't know. I was always under the impression that Americans
in general weren't terribly interested in moving abroad. Not so
much because they considered it and decided against it, but
because it simply never occurred to them to begin with.
Anyway, it all depends on what exactly the question was. It's
possible that 18% would like to spend a year abroad or some
such. I very much doubt that one in five would seriously
consider leaving the country for good.

For instance, you occasionally see stories about young Americans
moving abroad in order to avoid paying their (staggeringly high)
student loans. And it's always presented as an extreme measure,
on par with living in your car or some such. Where I'm from,
no-one would see it as particularly extreme. People emigrate all
the time. Especially those with technical skills of some sort
(not just engineers, but also repair people of various stripes,
and more recently, doctors, nurses, medical technicians, etc.).

I think the actual figure is about 50% who want to move and not
come back. Those who want to leave for a little while and come
back don’t count. They are the unenlightened ones.
The really thinking a majority know how bad it is and want out
for good, and I‘d say a conservative number is 50%- the educated
ones who have been out of their own backyards for awhile and
know how bad things really are. Of those able to move away for
good, the number is probably a bit lower, unfortunately. But,
there is no way in h*ll I‘m staying in that crap-hole of a
country. It makes me sick even thinking of having to go back.
And it will be for the shortest possible period.
The place is falling apart anyway. It’s like being on the
titanic and the boat just hit an iceberg and there aren’t even
enough lifeboats, so chaos is just running rampant with police
abuse, concentration camps, and a wanna-be-dictator leading the
whole nightmare. A place with no history, no culture, huge
corruption, where the rich get richer and the poor poorer. It’s
just the worst combination of all things imaginable. A
superpower to bully the world and terrorize its own people. A
real horror show.
Just read all those articles I posted, like America the Limonade
Stand to see what’s really going on.
The American population really is just like a battered housewife
who dares not show disloyalty to the brutal husband who will
eventually kill her though the physical abuse and beatings. The
population is the battered wife and the brutal police state is
the abusive husband getting away with it. It will only get worse
and how worse is easy to see. There's not long. The battered
wife’s only way of surviving is to get out of the abusive
relationship, and get as far away from the battering husband as
possible and have no contact with him to save her life. That’s
why half the population wants out.
And another warning. Walls are built around borders to keep
people in, not out. So, get out while you can, get out of the US
while there is still a chance.

As I didn't read the study, I can't draw definite conclusions,
but based on my impressions, I can only agree with Irena.
I find indeed that 18% is quite high and the way the question
was asked may have affected the outcome.
Americans apart, moving abroad in general is something many
people (worldwide) aspire to... for a short time.
Moving for good is another story.

The 18% figure is actually too low. It can't be that low. No
way.
The country is split right down the middle 50-50 with the
deluded or mega- rich half thinking things are fine and the
other half hating it, hating the miserable lives they are forced
to lead, having to work 80 hours a week at two crummy minimum
wage jobs to keep a multimillionaire boss who doesn’t deserve
the money rich, or go on food stamps and welfare to survive,
having no vacations, no healthcare, having to live in the
streets even though they have a job (yes people have jobs who
live in the streets because minimum wage cannot even allow
someone to rent an apartment)and hating the police, who deserve
it because they are all undertrained, corrupt, and brutal. You
have to watch what you say because you‘ll be put under the
„watch list“ with FBI and CIA surveillance of what you say. The
Americans are the most spied up people in the entire world by
their own government (intellectual Gore Vidal said in 1982 that
America spies on more of its own people than the Soviet Union
(then) did of theirs).
Who would seriously choose to live in a country like than and
who with any brains would stay there any longer than necessary?
And, the USA is the world‘s bully, always wanting to tell other
countries how to live.
The US is your alcoholic older brother, with violent tendencies.
Not someone you want to be around.
